Got microchipped yesterday....
 

Took Trevor to the vet yesterday for his rabies shot and to get microchipped. He did pretty well with the rabies, but the poor little baby didn't like the microchip one bit :mad: The vet tech who was holding him was wearing soft, rubbery bracelets and he grabbed them and yanked and pulleld on them the whole time they were doing the procedure. It only took a few seconds, but it seemed like forever, to me and him. Oh, well, it is over and he will never have to get it done again. I filled out the paper work and dropped it in the mail. Hopefully I'll never have to use it, but it's better safe than sorry. :)

I don't know if it was the trauma of going to the vet yesterday, but he didn't act like he felt very good yesterday. Mostly slept and wanted to be left alone or in my lap. But wild as ever this morning!! :eek:

Glad Trevor is feeling better and not feeling so traumatic anymore. It's too bad that they don't realize that all those visits to the vet is only for their own good huh?

Hi Trevor's mom! Glad Trevor's back to his old self. I have 3 1/2 month old Bo, so he hasn't had a rabies shot yet. He's still taking his round of puppy shots. Bo seems to be really tired after shots as well. Tell me how the microchip works. I've heard of it a lot but don't know the details. Thanks. :)

My puppie is a little over 3 mos. and I'm interested in also having her microchipped. Can you tell me how much it costed and how it works?

Oh your poor baby!! Hope he's better today! This post is of interest to me as I have to get our girls protected against rabies (we have no rabies here but if we plan to take them out of the UK we have to do it to comply with the Pet Pasport scheme and it has worried me but have been assured by eveyone that it is no problem but can make them sleepy (as in Trevor's case) but the big needle they use for microchipping wouldn't appeal to me either - this is another requirement but we had Gypsy Rose done whilst under anaesthetic for spaying and this is what we'll do with our baby Gizzie! Trevor is about 14 weeks old and we definitely have to have a rabies shot in Texas.

The microchipping was $45. Yes, the needle was big. If you've ever seen one of those needles that is used for yarn punching, like for hook latch rugs, that what it reminded me of. It's hollow, so the microchip if put inside. Even as big as it was, I couldn't find a mark on him once it was finished. The vet said they are extremely sharp so they hardly leave any marks and because it is done so quickly.

Once the microchip was implanted, they scanned it to make sure it worked. Thank goodness it did, because I would have hated to put my poor baby through that again.. :eek: Then they gave me some paperwork with the microchip number on it and a little tag, also with the number on it. You fill in the paperwork and mail it along with $12.50 to AKC. They are the monitors over the microchip database. You're puppy does not have to have AKC papers to have this done.

My vet says it is standard practice for all shelters, pounds and vets to scan for chips if a dog is found. Then they take that number and run it through the registry and find their mommies. Like I previously said, I hope NEVER to have to use it, but accidents to happen and I certainly would hope I would get my baby back if I ever lost him.

Im glad that Trevor is feeling much better today. Poor baby. Gucci is 6 months and im planning to spay her and microship at the same time. Wow im so scare now of that needle but like you all said is necessary. I just hope to never need to use it.

Does your Yorkie have to be a certain age to get this done. Is a yorkie ever to old to have it done? I think I would like to have one put in Amber. I would want to wait until she has her next vet checkup so I only have to pay for one office visit instead of two different ones. And I am not sure when she will have to go next as she has her puppy shots and rabbie shots done to.

You can have your dog microchipped at any age. I just wanted to get it done early so if anything ever happened, I would get him back quickly.

i'm wondering about tattooing? has anyone seen it done? is it hard to do? I just got three dogs with it done already.

My dog had hers done when I got her at 12 weeks old. So, I guess it can probably be done at just about any age. Also, she gets tired and sleeps a lot the day she gets her shots. Not sure if it is the shots or becauses she gets so excited and over stimulated at the vets. But she has done good with all the shots and the spaying.
Say, by the way, does anyone know when you take them back to the vets after all that is done? Like for their boosters? Is it when they are a year old (yearly check-up) Or a year from their last shot? The vet usually sends a letter of reminder, and I haven't gotten one yet, so was wondering!

As I said earlier, we waited until Gypsy Rose was spayed two months after her 1st season (normal here in Wales!) -- our vet would NOT microchip her when she was younger and Gyps was over a year old when spayed! It IS a big needle ...!!
