I'm a soon-to-be-owner of an adorable 6 1/2 week old yorkie pup!
 

Hi! I'm new here and am both anxiously and eagerly awaiting when my little one will be old enough to come home. In the meantime, I go out every week to visit and take pictures of her. I've pretty much decided upon naming her Molly.
And, from what I've read and my daughter (who recently acquired a 4 month old pug puppy) to feed her Wellness puppy food.

However, I haven't yet decided upon what carrier to buy for her. I want something reasonably priced, without being exorbitant, that is practical, functional and somewhat stylish. I'm leaning towards the purse styles. Such as the Glory carrier in rose, the Fluff bags (Coquette, Cupcake, etc.), Kwigo Bo Alex in black patent or the Riley or finally Sherpa's Jazzy or Montreal bags.

Anyone have any of these carriers? Can anyone relate their experience with any of these? I'm not quite sure yet which I like best.

By the way, Molly's mom Candy is 5 1/2 lbs and dad is 5 lbs. So Molly should be 5-6 lbs fully grown. According to the breeder anyway. She says that Candy's babies grow up in that weight range.

Oh, and also what size should I go for in these carriers?

i dont have any carrier advice i just wanted to remind you not to take your new puppy anywhere until she has had all of vaccines which would put her around 12-16 weeks old..no outings and no people touching her because of all the terrible diseases she could get

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I've been reading through the various threads and it is amazing how much valuable info there is!

I too had come across the scams where the supposed missionaries in Cameroon needed to re-home their baby. I was totally astounded! I also cannot believe that anyone would fall for it either. Not if they bothered to e-mail once or twice and the response you is basically demanding money.

The other thing that's scary is all of the dog-napping that goes on with this breed.

It was during my internet search that I just happened to come across my breeder. I e-mailed her and she called me the next morning telling me about Molly and her brother, and would I be interested since they were only a week old. OMG I was interested! I couldn't believe my luck!

I know the breeder told me that Molly will be micro-chipped, shots, worming, etc. before bringing her home. I first saw her when she was a week old and have been seeing her every week since. It is amazing how fast they grow and begin to show their personalities at so young an age. So far, there have been inquiries, but Molly's brother hasn't been taken yet. It was only the two of them in the litter. Their mother Candy is very pretty and very sweet. They are well socialized dogs. I feel lucky to have found a good breeder near me.

You'll find so much information here, so definitely jump in and take a look around :). One thing I do want to mention right off the bat is that 6 1/2 weeks is really too young for that pup to be taken from her Mama. A yorkie really shouldn't be removed from its Mama until around 12 weeks at the earliest, or even until 16 weeks if it's a tinier baby. I really can't express how vulnerable yorkie puppies can be - and how many tragic situations we've seen on this board from folks taking pups too early :(. I just wanted to say this because we've seen these heartbreaks firsthand here. Is there any way the breeder could keep this precious Molly until she is older?

As for the carrier, that's the fun stuff :D! I have a Celltei and I just love it for air travel. The ones you named are great too! Would LOVE to see pics of you girl - so definitely post some when you can.

Tammy, thanks for your advice. I had even considered having the breeder keep her a little longer. Instead of bringing her home at about 9 weeks old, perhaps at least a couple of weeks longer. I kind of think that being with mom for a bit longer might be better for her. Besides just being older and her body more mature and stronger in general.

Oh, I'm sorry. I did not mean to give the impression that I have her now. I don't. She's still with the breeder and with her mom. The breeder said it won't be until at least Oct. 26 before I could actually bring her home. In the meantime I just go and visit her at the breeder's house. Every time I go, I learn more info from the breeder, besides seeing Molly grow.

Welcome to YT!!! and congrats on Molly! I just wanted to say that you should first get Molly a cheap carrier and see if she likes it, instead of spending so much money on a carrier she won't even want to get into. I had bought my girls nice carriers, and low-and-behold... neither one of them want to step paw in them:rolleyes:
Just trying to save you some money incase you come accross the same problem with Molly I had with my girls.

I am also new to this aswell. My husband and I have been looking for a yorkie for the past 2 years. I haven't found a great place to get one. We did just recently find a place in evansport, ohio (which is about 2 hours from where we live) but haven't checked it out yet. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to find and where to look for a yorkie???

Congrats on becoming a new yorkie baby owner. You're going to wonder how you ever lived without her!

Love, LOVE the Alex carrier. I have 3 carriers, and the Alex is by far my fav! Oh and, I got mine on Ebay. It wasn't listed as a Kwigy Bo and I stole it for $30 (not new, but in great condition)! Its so cute, I'd wear it as an everyday purse if I could. Also, if you get the Alex, get the large bag. Its really not that big, and I'm not a big bag person. I have a 3.5-4 pound girl, and she fits it the large comfortably with some extra room to move around. I was afraid the petite, would be TOO petite.

Leave the bag you get around your house, keep some toys in it and allow her to go in and out of it. Let her get comfortable with it and she will hopefully like it. I think Mia realizes that if she goes in the bag, she comes with me... so she's totally content.

HI! I have a little girl yorkie (Miley).. We purchased a carrier from good ole walmart. She has been snuck into several places in there since the carrier looks like a coach purse. She actually will crawl on top of it and nap during the day if we leave it out. So really I think any carrier will do aslong as it has good ventilation and is sturdy.
Ps I order my WELLNESS puppy mix and she loves it. My min pin. and shih tzu do too. Ive ordered it from petco & petfooddirect. Both are relatively the same. One thing I love about wellness is you can buy a LARGE bag if needed bc it has a ziplock top built in.!

PSS I got my puppy at 7 weeks, to early, but when you do get your little girl just make sure she eats. I think sometimes they grieve when they first leave there momma's so you might want to get a couple cans of soft Wellness Puppy for those first few days.

Congrats and welcome to YT. I can't be any help for carriers because my two boys are WAY too big for them (8 and 14 lbs). I never tried Smokey with them since we got him at 6 months and he was already huge, but we tried them with Chip when he was a baby and he HATED them.

Gee, I never even gave it any thought as to whether or not she would refuse to go into/hate a carrier. So, at that rate, a good old cheap hard plastic one would do the job.

Good Lord! Your two boys are huge! Even if you could find a carrier big enough, they'd break your back carrying them. lol

And, yes, the excitement is building as the time passes....

You could even get a cheap carrier on Ebay or look for sales at walmart or petsmart to see if there is anything at a decent price. We had gotten Chip's at petsmart for about $15.00. We threw it out just a couple weeks ago... too bad I didn't see this earlier, I would have sent it to you!

Congratulations on your new baby. If you start at a young age putting Molly in a bag she will become used to it. It is like anything else and even a few minutes a day will help her become familiar and excited to go in her carrier. My little guy puts himself in his bag if we haven't gone anywhere because he wants to take a ride!

All of my Yorkies are comfortable in their carriers.... I even had one that hadn't traveled until 6 years old.

You want to really get to know the breeder. Ask questions like how many times they breed a year and where they keep the puppies. It is very important with small breeds that they are not over bred - just because someone is a private breeder does not mean they take good care of their. If you are looking for a small Yorkie please be sure that no one promises you a tea cup. That can't be guaranteed. If you do want a small dog - their grandparents weights are more important sometimes then their actual parents. Good breeders use a little larger female and a smaller male. The older the puppy the more time it will give you to know if it is healthy and the size. You can really get to know someone and how they care for their dogs by speaking with them and also visiting where the puppies are kept. There are many breeders out there and many that will even ship their dogs... I don't believe in this as Yorkie can get low blood sugar when they are so tiny and should not be left alone.
