having a baby with a yorkie No I'm not pregnant - yet... but I was thinking. I eventually want to have children within a couple years. Chip, however, isn't so great with children. I mean he's great with my friend's baby when she was an infant (we haven't seen her in awhile), and he's okay with a child if he can spend about 30+ minutes sniffing them, they aren't acting rowdy around him, and they let him go to them. What got me thinking was that yesterday we were at PetSmart and this little girl came up (without asking) and let him sniff her for a very split second then went to pet him. He got scared and kinda snipped at her in the air. I don't think he would ever actually bite anyone, but I think he's just snapping as a warning. I guess my question is if there is anyone out there that has had a yorkie FIRST that is territorial, kinda grouchy (lol), and doesn't really like kids, then had a child of their own and how did it work out. |
I think it's different when it's your baby. My friend has a dog (not a yorkie) who isn't a fan of people in general and he took to the new baby no problem. When the baby was born they brought home a blanket that the baby was wrapped up in to get used to the scent. A newborn baby is a bit different from an older child that might scare the dog too. I would call a trainer maybe if you are that worried one of my friends did that and it worked out great. The most important thing is to make sure you show love to your dog too once baby is born. |

My 3 Yorkies hates kids too! My 3 Yorkies hate Kids too but they tolerate them b/c you can Train a Dog to do anything and b/c I won't tolerate it? Yeah they used to be afraid of Thunder Storms & Fireworks too, but I Trained them NOT to be. They have been in many situations where they felt uncomfortable and were not Happy but they had to adjust and tolerate them b/c they were posing for a picture or they had asked permission to pet them? I trust all 3 of them NOT to bite anyone under any circumstances for any reasons and Yes, the majority of the time I know they don't really want to be around them but I make them do it b/c I don't want mine to have any issues or promblems w/Children or People in general or even other Animals. I have had so many Friends that have had a Dog and then later decided to have a Child, and then ended up getting rid of their Dog b/c they did'nt take the time to "Train" it. I would not live my Life around my Yorkies, meaning having a Baby has nothing to do with whether or not your Yorkie likes them? If you have a well Trained/Socialized, balanced, submissive, well behaved Dog they can do anything! There are no excuse for "Agression", fear, nervousness, anxiety, are all un-desirable traits. A dog that bites for any reason should not be tolerated IMO. How did you respond, what was your reaction? Most of the time we don't realize that we make matters worse by trying to comfort their fears w/affection and ultimately end up enforcing the bad behaviour? What have you done to make them feel more confident around them? Just wondering? |
When we were taking him to obedience class there was one time where a little girl came in for the class after us and she sat with Chip for about 45 minutes to an hour just letting him sniff her. Eventually he was warming up to her enough to take a treat, which was amazing, because he never takes treats from anyone except us and my family. Also there were two little kids in the class training their dogs and he got used to them. He's fine if the kids know how to properly handle a dog and are patient, but if they don't give him enough time to adjust or are doing things like pulling hair, chasing, etc. he will snap. |
