Is it True....? I was told by my baby's breeder that a Vet wont vaccinate the pups until they weigh 2lb. Does anyone know if this is true for all Vets or just hers in particular? She wont be vaccinating the pups because they wont be 2lb when they leave her. Sound right to you? Jess :heart to |
No it doesnt sound right to me. Mine were a lb and less than a lb when they came to me and the vet vaccinated them. They had also already gotten one round of shots from the breeder |
I don't think that is standard protocol but I like it.:) The longer you can safety wait to give them, the better. I suppose each vaccine comes with an insert telling the vet at what wait it can be given but maybe not. |
Mika got her first jab with the breeder at 6 weeks old then her second with me at 8 weeks old she was already 2lb by then but must have been less when she had her first. Also when I used to keep ferrets I used to have them vaccinated as babies and they were much less than 2lbs (my tiniest one was only 1lb full grown) and they were vaccinated with the EXACT same jabs that they use on dogs (smaller doses obviously). Some adult yorkies are only 3lbs or even alot less full grown, does he not vaccinate these ones til they're 2lb too? What if they don't reach that til they're a year old or more? Maybe the vet doesn't want to give these particular pups their jab yet for some other reason:confused: I don't know:confused: Or maybe the breeder just loves her babies sooo much, she wants to hold onto them that little bit longer to give them more time with their mother and she just wants to give their new families some more reasons for holding onto them:rolleyes: Don't worry she will be home with you soon enough:D |
Wrigley had her first shots with the breeder and when we brought her home at 12 weeks, she weighed 1.13lbs. |
I hate to look at the negative side but she might not want to spend money on the shots? Is she a reputable breeder? At what age is she letting the puppies go? If she's letting them all go before they get to 2lbs, then she might just want you to pay for their shots. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of the 2lbs rule before and it would definitely arouse suspicion with me. |
That can't possibly be true ... Toto didn't weigh 2 lbs. until she was 8 months old! I have never heard of that before. |
my male was 1.5 pounds when he was due for his shots. My vet gave him the shots but she only gave him 1 set and told me to come back in a week. She said sometimes the little ones don't handle the shots well so she said better safe than sorry. So he did get all his shots but over a 2 week time period. |
not true. your breeder is wanting to save money.:) |
I know Caylee was vaccinated before I got her and then she had shots yesterday and was less then a pound. |
The only time I have ever heard of the 2lb rule is when they get fixed . Check with A new vet. |
Hmmm, yeah, it does seem a little sus after I've heard all of your resaponses, but I dont suppose it's anything to worry about, is it? I mean, even if it's purely that she doesn't want to have to pay for the vaccinations, it's just a bit annoying for me, right? It doesn't mean I shouldn't trust her or have one of her pups, does it? What d'you guys think? Jess :heart to |

When to vaccinate is determined by age, not weight. Puppies get maternal antibodies from nursing their mother so any vaccinations given before about 9-10 weeks will be attacked and killed. After that, your puppy will be completely unprotected from deadly diseases so he should begin his series of vaccinations. Dr. Dodds recommends that the first vaccine be given around that time. Here is her schedule which has been adopted by 27 vet schools. W Jean Dodds Vaccine Protocol VACCINATION PROTOCOLS |
Oh, I should also point out that I also wouldn't trust her, because she lied about the 2lb issue. So I would wonder what else she could be lying about or keeping from me? |
