Battle of the brush Can someone give me some info on how to brush my 3 month old yorkie. He will not sit still and tries to nip at my hands when I try to brush him. He does pretty good getting a bath. If he sees me with the brush he will back up and start barking. I have had him 3 weeks and I have tried to brush him everyday. I use treats but to no avail. He just hates to be brushed. He does great in every other aspect. He is completely pee pad trained and trained outside. He never has an accident in the house. He is completely crate trained and never cries to get out. He has slept all night since day one with no accidents in his crate. My only concern is trying to groom him. He lets me brush his teeth with no problem. I have an appointment with a groomer in 3 weeks. Hopefully she will have more success than I've had.: |
Welcome to YT! What kind of brush do you use? Does it pull his hair? Is his hair tangled? Do you use a creme rinse to make sure it is not so hard to get a brush through his hair? Are you gentle? :D I think the groomer can probably give you some pointers...mention it to her/him. |
You might try brushing while in your lap. Especially if he's tired and sleepy. It really doesn't matter if you're brushing the right way or anything just getting him used to the feel of the brush is what's important. |

First you need a a dog brush and comb, do not use a human comb or brush they do not work well. Go to either Walmart or Petsmart/Petco and purchase a decent comb and brush http://www.petco.com/product/15399/F...-for-Dogs.aspx Finishing Touch Pin Brush for Dogs at PETCO It doesn't matter were you buy them but they should be similar to these. What I did and it really worked for me was this: Get some very small treats (cheese, cheerios etc) brush and comb and put your puppy up on either the table, counter, or in the laundry room on the washer on top of a towel. This will help when it comes time to go to the groomer as well. Start by giving a treat and then praise, praise, praise and while you are doing this start to run the brush on his coat. Do this for very short periods of time several time a day~no more than a minute or two at a time. Little by little you can increase the time you groom. Treat, praise, brush or comb. This will take a lot of time and patience but it will work. Good luck with your baby! |
Battle of the Brush Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I will start trying new strategies with treats today when "Winston" is sleepy and tired. He is just a little live wire when he is awake. This is my first Yorkie. I had a Llaso Apso for 18 yrs and he just loved to be brushed. I had to put him down 7 years ago and it has taken me this long to want to get that attached again. Winston is completely different, but I have already become so attached to him. He has really won over my heart. |
Just keep tryint Bella used to fight me constantly when I brushed her. Biting the brush, running away, snapping at the brush. But she is now almost a year old (Sept 29) to be exact. And after may months of trying she will finally most of the time lay still and seems to enjoy it. Now brushing her teeth is still a battle we have not mastered yet. |

Great advice! This is exactly what I did with Phoebe...and she is a dream to groom. Consistency, and persistence, tied with alot of patience, praise and love trains them to not fight it so much. You should have seen Phoebe at 13 weeks...sheesh....biting, fighting.... Good luck! |
Hi, my Logan is over a year now and I am just starting to be able to brush him.... do it slow... with treats and while he is asleep... you got to have patient :) |
Find the Soothing Spot It does take patience and I've found starting with a spot that they love to have petted---behind ears, belly---has a calming effect. The brush may also be too stiff for his delicate skin so you may want to try the grooming comb. Johnny actually likes that. |
:welcome4: Mine both love to be brushed...I think it is from years of having to put up with it  I mainly use my boar bristle brush and they love it. I use a spray conditioner as well and that helps if there are any little knots. Treats are always a great way to keep them occupied and happy. I make brushing our "special" time too. I massage and rub and tickle and give kissies....I seriously think they look forward to brushing! Keep up the good work...it will pay off in no time! |
Mine did that at first too, then they got used to it. I have the best luck with a pin brush without the little balls on the end of it. I comb them with a wide tooth comb while the conditioner is on them and then rinse, it makes brushing a lot easier after the bath. Keep brushing him, catch him when he is sleepy. Set up a time in the evening before you go to bed and he'll eventually get used to it being done, and will learn to love it. |
My Katy was the same way at that age but I kept at it each night until she realized I meant business. She even tried to bite me but I did not let her think it was a game. Now she is 5 months old and holds very still and even lets me put her hair up in a topknot without moving a muscle. One thing she did NOT like and still doesn't is a "slicker" brush. I think because her hair is thin and fine it hurts her little skin. I only use a pin brush after I spray her hair with a conditioner and then I comb her through. Just don't give up they eventually get the idea that if they hold still it will be over with sooner. LOL |
I massage trixie in between brushes |
Brush? What kind of Brush are you using? It sounds like your using the wrong kind? My 3 Yorkies absolutely Love being brushed at least twice a day sometimes 3 times a day. I put them on my Lap and brush them from every angle and I use a leave in conditioning spray too. I massage them alot so they enjoy it, you have to make them feel relaxed so they will allow you to do it w/o a struggle and actually look foreward to doing it. Try to be calm and control them w/o being tense b/c they feel your Energy. |
