Yorkies and hardwood stairs. Hello everyone. My husband and I are looking into adopting a yorkie puppy. The more I learn the more questions I have. Now I understand that they can die just jumping off a bed. The first thing I thought of was my hardwood staircase. I didn't realize they were so fragile. How would a yorkie ever be able to navigate hardwood stairs? Anybody have experience with this. I don't want to live in fear that she would fall and hurt herself. Please let me know as I'm pretty sure we've found the little girl for us. Thanks much. |
Were having hardwood flooring and stairs installed and we've been wondering if the girls will be able to "safely" go up and down without slipping and falling down or even over the side. I think we may have to put a 24" wide carpet runner up them to be on the safe side. |
I think Hot Rod slip and fell once. I was in the other room and he had "escaped". I heard scratching kind of noises and then a thud and then a yelp. He has been leary when I have taken him up--I stand behind him when I do. Maggie has just taken off up the stairs and down! She slipped once while I was running after her but only on one step and caught herself and took off again. I could see them slipping very easily so I would suggest supervising them when they go up or down. I keep a baby gate in front of the stairs now just in case either escapes from the gated family room. |
If you are nervous you may want to think about getting a bigger yorkie. Ours is pretty sturdy at a little over 4lbs at almost 4 months old. At first I was worried about him falling/jumping off of the couch, but after him doing it a few times I know that he is fine. He is still fragile, but not as much as a 2lb yorkie. |
I would think it would depend upon the finish. Some finishes are much slippery than others, the shinier the finish the slippery it is. We have shinny wood finish in living room and dining room, and he slides on the floor when running for an object. I'm fairly diligent about keeping the footpads clipped as well as the surrounding hair, but he still slides. I would never feel comfortable with this shinny finish on steps. The outdoor stairway steps leading to the backyard, has wood steps that are painted with a gripping property that helps quite a bit. I don't think it's common for a Yorkie to die while jumping off a couch or bed, but I have read of them falling down stairs, and dying. Joey has fallen down a few steps, but was able to catch himself on the carpet, and stop the fall, without any injury what so ever. We keep steps by the bed and couch, not because Joey is so tiny he's around 5 ½ pounds, and can probably manage fine without them, the steps are so that he doesn’t cause constant stress to his joints by jumping, over time this could led to problems. On a smaller puppy it could lead to instant injuries. |
I was told by a friend that has bred Yorkies for 34 years that Yorkies are very fragile and should not jump off of furniture or anything high up. However, my Sidney jumps up very high and jumps off of furniture that is really high. She is fine and gets real excited a lot when she starts jumping around. I would keep the stairs gated though because if your Yorkie does slip down them it could hurt her really badly. I've fallen down hardwood stairs and it hurts me, let alone a 5 lb dog. |
If you have hardwood stairs, you definitely want to get a carpet runner. There was a thread on here where Breny's baby fell down a whole flight of hardwood stairs :eek: I have hardwood stairs as well, and couldn't imagine not having a carpet runner 'cause Mocha sometimes slips on the hardwood floor in some of the rooms. |
I have hardwood stairs and my little guy did slip and rolled down. Fractured his elbow and after $900 at vet and consultation was told he would need surgery of $3400. Needless to say I could not afford the surgery and his leg healed well on its own he is back to normal. This does not always happen I was lucky hence the reason I now have insurance. So yes you may want to gate the stairs until they are much older. Even now my yorkie is 7 months remembers and does not go up and down readily. |

I have hardwood stairs. We have been lucky. Blossom has fallen a few times when trying to learn how to navigate them. She's now over a year old and does not walk up and down them. We carry her. Not a problem though. |
