Puppy Growth (height/length) ??? Hi everyone! I have a 17wk old female yorkie that currently weighs 23.8 ounces. I have had her for 3 weeks. She was 18.8 ounces when I got her at 14 weeks, so you can see that she has grown a lot in a short period of time. At 14 weeks, she was a perfect little square in height and length. I don't know the measurements, but she looked very balanced. She has a very solid body, not underweight at all. Now, at 17 weeks, she appears to be much longer than she is tall. It seems that all 5 ounces that she gained was in length. She looks like a little weiner dog? So, my question is, do puppies sometimes grow length or height first and then balance out as they keep growing? Thanks in advance! Wendi and the Stinky Tinky |
Yes, they can grow in spurts. My Beamer was the little one in my litter. At about 8 weeks, he was already bigger than his sister and had longer legs and length, but still rather square. Then he grew longer.. in fact we used to joke that he needed an extra pair of legs in the middle to balance him out. That was at 8 months. Now he is again rather square again although long and tall. He is now 6.5 lbs. His sister who was bigger at birth is only a little over 4 1/2 lbs right now and has always stayed rather square. So they all are different. |
The genetic programming for leg length and body length are separate. Your puppy may balance out as she grows or continue to be long body short leg. The best indicator is to look at the parents. This is very common when small males are bred to larger females. |

Thank you. Thank you for your replies. I sure hope she evens out, eventually. I really like the square look. I'm not sure about her parents. The photo that I have seen of the Dam is of a front view of her sitting and the photo of the Sire is him lying upright with his legs out in front of him, at an angle, with his head facing the camera. He looks pretty balanced from what I can see. Both have beautiful petite faces, which I love. I know it could depend on the grandparents, as well. I have no idea what they look like. The Dam is only 3.5 pounds, so I don't think it's an issue of a small Sire being bred to a much larger Dam. Tinker has an amazing personality, so she will be perfect in my eyes, regardless of her final dimensions. I really just wanted to know if it's possible for her height to eventually catch up to her length and it sounds like that happens sometimes. Thanks again. Wendi and Tinkerbell |

Dreamer.... Dreamer, No, I don't. I wasn't very concerned with size at the time. I would assume that he is smaller than the female. Wouldn't he have to be? It seems like my little girl is growing at an awfully fast rate, doesn't it? Her size has increased by 30% in 3 weeks! Is that normal at this age? She doesn't seem chubby, just solid. Thank you, Dreamer. I have been following the feeding directions on the kibble closely and she doesn't get treats. That's why I was surprised that she is gaining so quickly, since I know I'm not overfeeding. I was also really surprised when I looked at her one day and realized that my little square was suddenly a rectangle! I can't believe how fast these little guys can change in only 3 short weeks!!! It kind of freaks me out Wendi & Tinkerbell |
Dreamer, Dreamer, I forgot to ask, how old are Bella and Buddy and what is their size difference? Are they siblings? I think it would be so neat to have a brother and sister so that they could grow up together. If Tinker had a brother or sister available for adoption, I would have been really tempted. Buddy just truned one last weekend and I have not weighed him in a while but he is probably 5 1/2-6lbs. HE quit growing by 8 months. Bella was born April 25th so she is 5 months and a couple of weeks ago she weighed 3lb 2 oz, we expect her to be the same size as Buddy full grown. They are not siblings, if Bella makes it up to Buddy's size they will be breed. Sarah |
Awww..... Awwww.....they're a little couple. How cute! My little girl is starting to freak me out! She has gained 3oz in the last 3 days! That's a little bit more than she has been gaining in a week. That seems like way too much for such a little girl to gain. An ounce per day? She is acting fine, so I guess I shouldn't worry about it. If she keeps this up, though, she is going to be HUGE! It is going to vary a little depending on what time of day you weigh her versus when she last ate, etc so it might not be that much. I would recommend you stop weighing her so much, as long as she is healthy and happy you are worrying about nothing. I thought the same thing about Buddy and he is just perfect in my book. I love the 5-7lb range. You can look at the puppy growth charts but so far I know very few dogs that really follow it, according to Bella's weight pattern she was going to be off the charts huge when she was in her first few months of life and now it says she will be in the 4lb range and she will most likely be 5-6lbs. Hopefully you did not pay a lot extra to have a tiny one, because I would guess she will be bigger than her mommy!! |
I actually weigh her every morning after she does her "business". I am keeping a little weight chart for her with pictures that go along with it, for memory's sake. I know it's dorky, but she will only be a puppy once. I have a good postage scale in my home office, so it's easy to pop her on there in the morning. I paid $2,800 for her with shipping. I think she probably was priced higher because she was only 18 ounces at almost 14 weeks. I fell in love with her, not for her size, but for her little square compact shape and her teddy bear face. I was told that she would be about 2.5-3 pounds full grown, though. I have a little adult Maltese that is a bit over 3# and I got Tinker as a companion for her. Tinkerbell is adorable, regardless of her size. But, I do hope that she regains the cute little square shape that she had when I got her a few weeks ago, though. :-) Wendi and Tink |
