Litter box training? Does anyone does this with their yorkie? If so please tell me the pros and cons and why you decided this rather than paper training? thx |
I started Baxter and Cooper on litter box training when we did not have a fenced in yard , and sometimes they were home alone too long to hold it. I used it instead of potty pads because I thought it would be cheaper than constantly changing pads.. PROS 1. Can't be shredded or moved around like potty pads. 2. Absorbs odor (urine) 3. A little cheaper than potty pads--a large bag (15 lbs I think), lasts me about a month to six weeks. One bag is about $14. Now that we have our yard fenced in, only Baxter still uses the indoor potty. Cons: 1. Will have to use bitter apple on it until they learn to not eat it 2. The litter does track some, I sweep it up, or use the dustbuster daily. 3. Dog litter is harder to find than pee pads, the only places I've found it is at Petco or Petsmart. 4. Dogs have a dry place to go when its rainy or cold outside. Tips: I buy the large geriatric bed pads by the case at Sam's. I line the bottom of the potty box with one, then put the box inside a large trash bag, then fill it with litter. When it is time to empty it, I can just empty the bag. The pads also come in handy to put underneath the box..the largest size will stick out enough on all 4 sides to absorb any mistakes--Baxter sometimes starts peeing before he makes it all the way in... |
oops #4 should be a pro! |
I recently bought just the litter box and I put the pee pads (also from Sam's) in the box, hoping that they just go in the box on the pee pad versus missing the pee pad. It's a never-ending battle. |
My Shih Tzu is litter box trained. I like the litter box, because it allowed my dog to go potty when I was not home. In addition, the litter box kept the dog's waste inside the box. I hated using the litter box, because my dog tracked the litter all over my room. Buying the litter every two weeks got expensive. The dog litter made by Purina did not soak up the urine well. Now I use washable pads. They save me money and time spent buying the litter from the store. |
I forgot to mention the main reason I trained my dog to use the litter box was to protect my dog from other animals. My neighbors' dog kept on getting in my yard. I was afraid she would get attack while going potty. |
I tried putting the pad inside the litterbox when Baxter was little and we were in the midst of 4 feet of snow. But all this little Tazmanian Devil (and I say that with the utmost love lol) All he would do is lay in the box, and shred the pad, then he would lay outside the box and chew on it. Sooooo at 3 months and weighing a hefty 2.5 lbs we learned to dress up (as you will see in my pic album with his red and black jacket and hat) So we would dress up and go out into the snow to pee. What a task when your trying to potty train LOL. Good luck with the box. |
Hi there. I am box training my puppy, although I'm lining the box with puppy pads instead of using litter. (We tried the litter once and it was a disaster ... he got it everywhere!) I started out "paper" training him on puppy pads, and when he had that down I moved the pads to the inside of the box. I chose to box train him because it was a neater and cleaner permanent option than paper training or leaving puppy pads directly on the carpet. The pros for me are that Oscar always has access to a safe potty area, and when the weather is bad I don't have to take him outside. I have an apartment on the second floor and didn't want to constantly be carrying him up and down the stairs to go out. Also, there are a couple days a week when I'm gone 8 hours and I didn't want him to have to hold it. The only con is that I am constantly changing puppy pads ... he can get a little messy and the pads are somewhat expensive, but the convenience of not having to worry about getting him outside in time makes it worth it. |
