microchip With so many yorkies getting lost latly, I have being thinking about microchipping trixie. The only problem is that most people I know, use avid. For that reason, I had my mind set on avid myself. I think that it must be good since so many people buy that one. What makes me doubt my dessition is this article :fact thatOnly veterinarians can implant HomeAgain™ chips. AVID® chips can be implanted by shelter personnel, individuals, or veterinarians. Breeders often use the AVID® system because the company offers incentives to chip entire litters, but puppy buyers should be aware that the scanners used by many veterinarians come from HomeAgain™ and cannot read the number on AVID chips. Costs vary with these systems depending on the number of dogs owned and whether the dog is enrolled in the national database. please help me make up my mind |
Both of my girls have Home Again. It is a great service and widely used. I have never heard of Avid. |
All three of mine have Home Again and that's the one I would highly recommend getting. ;) |
chipping 3 of my 4 are chipped with avid here in pennsylvania avid is widely used # 4 will be chipped next month when she turns 6 months old our vet doesn't like to do the chipping until they get alittle biger , mercedes is about 2 1/2 lbs now :thumbup::aimeeyork:) |
We have Avid... Our Humane League did it for free as a promotion for a new bank, they registered it too!!! Baron was 6 months old when he was done. I was really afraid of him getting out and not seeing him and thinking he might be stolen is what made me have him done!! I'm so glad I did. I keep his reg. # on my keyring, just in case... I have read various things about this, and someone wrote that any vet could have any one of these scanner devises for free. Not sure if this is true, but she seemed pretty insistent on it. |

Thank you very much to all of you, for answering to my post. Also, I want to ask you guys if the injection site ever get infected, if it hurts, if they cry, ect. I was watching some videos in utube, and I saw a little maltese, being chipped. She did not cry at all, but the chinese crested, seemed to be in so much pain!! take a look |

Also the technique used could have been different and some dogs are more sensitive to pain than others, maybe even the amount of fat makes a difference. I do know that there is a huge range of skill in those that deliver shots and give IV's, and the first dog, it looked like the doctor flinched when he inserted the microchip. Joey had his done at the same time as neutering for this reason, no sense hurting them if you don’t have to. |
My Suzi is not microchipped. She is with me always though, never alone outdoors either. I am quite protective over her. However, I am still thinking of getting her microchipped. Just for the piece of mind. I have heard that the chip is only the size of A grain of rice. Very tiny. I do not know anything about the different brands. I would take her to our vet for the procedure. :aimeeyork |
None of my babies are microchipped either, I've been thinking about getting it done, but don't want to see my babies cry out in pain. My vet does not do it, otherwise I would've had it done when they were spayed or neutered. My vet is very old school, but my family has been using him for 30 years now, he's a very sweet man and I trust him with my babies. So I would definitely have to go somewhere else to have it done, but like I said I don't want to see them cry out in pain, so I haven't done it yet. We have a home security system and when they leave the house they are with me, so I don't worry too much. |
You've highlighted the main reason why I haven't had either of my dogs chipped. I too, read an article about how each company has it's own scanner, so it's quite possible that a vet/shelter worker could scan your pet and never get the info. I guess you could always call around and find out which scanner most of the shelters/vet clinics use in your area. What are the chances that they will all be the same or your dog will end up where they have the correct scanner? Now after reading about how that those dog thieves in NYC easily changed the chip info, I'm even more reluctant. |
hi! i just wanted to add our experiences w/ microchipping. our vet in minnesota uses avid. both our kitties were chipped before our move to san diego. our vet here uses home again. when we brought playdoh (our kitty) in for her annual exam, we told her new doctor she was chipped w/ avid. we didn't have her number w/ us to give him. he said it didn't matter which company her chip came from, the wands work w/ all. he then scanned her & wrote her number on her chart~ remember he uses home again. as for your concern w/ the pain, it's the same as getting a shot. our kitties are ok w/ shots, cali (our yorkie) cries a little. both our kitties were done super quick! they were a little sore in the area of injection, but otherwise acted the same. another thing to consider, we had cali microchipped when she was spayed. so she definitely didn't feel it. i don't know what your plans are for your baby, just another option for ya. i hope this helps! good luck w/ your decision! :) |
Actually, at my Vet office, we use Avid because it can be read by a universal scanner which a lot of Vets actually use, therefore, I do not believe that should be much cause for concern. |

My vet uses home again. They say that the chip is about the size of a grain of rice and that the needle is a stinker!! Therefore, when Ollie (my maltese) was neutered, I had them microchip him while he was sedated. I will also do the same with Krissie Bella. I just can't stand to think of them crying like the poor "Chinese Crested" dog was on the utube video. Ollie hasn't had any problems with his. Which, if they ever leave my feet, they will have to be pryed away from my dead body and stolen. They are such mommies babies..... |

I don't really know that either chip is better than the other, but I rest a little easier knowing if they got out I might get them back by just chipping them. Heck, I would put a GPS on them if it was available, if it meant I would get my babies back if they got lost! |
