Second Yorkie?
 

I recently purchased my first dog...ever. Now I'm contemplating buying a 2nd. I'd always wanted a Yorkie for as long as I could remember. And when I bought my first house with a nice big yard that became a possibility for me. Now that I have Orion, I realize how great it would be for him to have a partner. He gets really excited when my friends bring their dogs over. I work about 50 hours a week and am involved in other activities that keep me from being home. Orion is the love of my life and I feel so bad leaving him home alone. I just want to get some opinions from some more experienced Yorkie owners. Is it a good idea to get a 2nd Yorkie? If I do, I would want to get a female, so my next question is, being an inexperienced owner (and a full time worker) would it be selfish of me to want to breed them, or would it be best to fix the female?

Absolutely! I just got my 2nd pup about 2 months ago and it is A LOT of work but it is so worth every minute of it. My older pup now has a buddy with him all of the time and they love each other to the ends of the earth as do I. I am so blessed to be able to have 2 puppies and I am blessed that they get along so well. I highly recommend getting another pup but only if you have the time to devote to them and the money to pay for everything.....you already have one so you know what I'm talking about. They require a ton of patience and love that's for sure but you get it in return 10 fold.

How old is your first pup?

I would say that with your busy work schedule that breeding will be a lot to add to your plate but I don't know the first thing about breeding so I will leave that to the experts on YT to answer.

I say yes!!! better now than later.. I got Evie when Kayah was a little over two years old.. and it took Kayah FOREVER to get used to Evie..

BUT here's my big BUT! with all the hours you work.. plus going back on the pedigrees on both dogs (and all the breeds we have already).. I would get BOTH of them fixed!!

Believe me it's best for both of them. I never had Kayah fixed in the hopes of breeding her, but when I did my research (and yes, I wanted, still do, become a ligit breeder) it takes a LOT of work.. way more than I expected.. so i never did that to her.. and, although I still want to breed.. it will be in the future, when I can stay home and care to the most important thing to me: my "babies"

Evie my 10 month baby was spayed at 6 1/2 months.. and at the time, I thought I was doing the worst thing ever... she's sooo much better off.. and she's such a lovey bug now:) but yet, still so fiesty!

Anywho... get a second.. but since you don't have the time (and I'm sure you don't want Orion (cute name btw) lifting all over the house) get them BOTH fixed:D:)

I would say this is America and you have the right to do what you want. I am currently in socal in a fight with my local government over penalties they want to charge me for not fixing me dogs. 200 bucks a year to register my dog just cuz he has all his parts. So just make sure you check all your local ordinances and laws before considering keeping your animals in tact. Again, we are all protected from discrimination from the constitution but its a hassle to have in tact animals...and getting a license to breed can be soooo much harder.

If you are as busy as you say i would wait till you retire or something. You will have plenty of time for it between the ages of 65 to 100. breeding and gardening hehe.:animal-pa

So why don't you get them fixed then instead of paying $200 every year???

I definitley say yes to another yorkie, Im getting a pal for Milo too. But I say no to breeding, tiny baby yorkies need round the clock care and 50 hour work weeks just wont cut it. Not only that, you want to learn about it and stuff so I would say just keep them as pets for now.

Katie was 14 months when we got Suzi they are soul mates. Got on well from the start.

Don't hesitate love, it's great for them to have a playmate.

I would definately say yes to another Yorkie for your little one. Given your work schedule, I would consider getting an older female-6 months or so-as smaller puppies require alot of attention and observation. I would be concerned that maybe your schedule would make that difficult. And if you aren't there to supervise them and prevent "accidents", you'd have to get one or the other altered...or keep them separated while you are away, thus defeating the whole purpose!

As far as breeding them, I would say no way! At least not now. It is a very time consuming venture and from the description, seems like your work schedule would make it darn near impossible.

If you are intersted in breeding in the future though, you can and should definately get started now preparing yourself by researching, studying the breed standard, meeting some other Yorkie breeders, working with them if possible, finding a mentor. These are all things to do BEFORE breeding and will do nothing but benefit you in the long run. (Before even buying breeding stock--otherwise, how would you know what to look for in a dog?)

i have a 9 mth old neutered male yorkie. i am thinking about getting a second. does anyone have an opinion on what is better male vs female?:animal36

it's personal preference, really. some like just the boys, other like just girls, and most want to have a pair (personally I like the girls:D.. no offense boys)

Also, some males lift, and females can get bitchy.. also I heard that males are more on thelover side while females tend to keep to themselves.. and while that is true with Kayah (my older one), Evie loves to cuddle.. but when she's had enough.. she'll just get up and move to the other end of the couch or whatever

I'd have to agree with the other posts. NO to breeding, there is so much that goes into it, and not all puppies survive. :(

I am picking up my second yorkie on Sunday (yay!!!). I am kind of nervous about Lucy getting along with her, but I am going to take it slow with them. She's not aggressive, just shy. She is still very playful so I think once she is used to it, she'll love it.
