Ear infections Chelsea has both ears infected. The vet RX an ear ointment, 3x a day. She refuses us in adminstering the medication. I am to squirt the ointment in each ear, and massage the ears. She wont hold still, growls and bites. Any suggestions, as to how to administer this med in her ears????? Please, HEEEEELLLPPP!!! Thanks in advance, Chelsea'sMom :aimeeyork |
Our ddb gets ear infections ALL THE TIME. A regular occurance with droopy eared dogs. He's fine with us putting the medicine in, but if you're having problems, have someone else hold her still while you put the medicine in. I have my fiance hold Bailey when I brush his teeth, because I don't have enough hands to hold him & brush |
I know how to (probably) solve your problem. Put her on your washing machine or kitchen counter. She should "freeze". She won't feel comfortable enough to squirm around. Don'e get nervous or exited when you are doing it, she will pick up on that. Let me know if this works. |
Sorry, both suggestions wont work, she hates for someone to hold her head. She violently will do the wiggle dance, and she tries to bite the hand that feeds her. I spoke to our vet, and he insists she needs the med, so this afternoon, while she was trying to be lazy, laying on the floor, I plopped peanut butter on her nose, and as she worked on licking it off, I squirted the med in both ears, and managed to also massage both ears. I dont know how long I will get away with this method, since she is VERY smart, and will, probably figure out what is happening soon. AND to think this med has to be dispensed 3x a day for 10 days. Have you tried to place a towel around her to restrain . My mentor showed me this trick . |

If you wrap your hand completely around one of her legs that should work (at least it does for Bruce), she will know she cannot make an easy get away and should stop putting up a fight. |
Ear update My vet and I agreed the treatment of the ear ointment isnt working, she wont allow us to administer....SHE BITES! All methods have failed! So, yesterday, we started two pill meds, which is NOT a problem to administer. I just give to her, and she woooofs them down. Chelsea isnt shaking her head, nor scratching with her paws, so it looks like we are on the downside of the infection. She is back to playing and barking, so we know she is feeling much better, yet she is very "sticky" with me, wants to be in my lap, or she isnt a happy camper. Chelsea'sMOM :aimeeyork |
