Winter and Yorkies We live in MN and the winters can be brutal. Our Lhasa Poo had problems with the cold sometimes, now we have this 7# Yorkie! Do any of you litter box train your little ones for winter? I just got her housebroke but now I'm worried about her going out in winter. Hubby used to shovel a special path for the Lhasa Poo and she would still get to cold sometimes even though the snow wasn't deep. She loved the snow and would play in it on warmer days, but there were a few times on colder days she got so cold just going potty I'd have to carry her back because she'd hold her feet up and then just lay down in the snow. I know she would have frozen to death if I hadn't been watching her. If you litter box trained them how did you do it, was it hard? I mentioned little box training her when I adopted her and the lady I got her from said it was "ALOT OF WORK". Like it was a big deal so I didn't do it. |
There are several different types of coats and jammies that are available that will help with keeping her dry and warm. Also the booties, although they look a little silly on, do really help to keep their feet warm. |
The boys wear coats. They are velcro and go on and off easily. I would like to get some boots because sometimes they get out to the other side of the yard and just stop because their little paws are so cold. I never leave them out for longer than just to potty and breathe some fresh air when it's really cold. (or any other time for that matter). Mine are potty pad trained. I use washable potty pads. I'm sorry I have no experience with litter boxes, but lots of experience with cold winters. |
We live in Nebraska, and I do know that your weather can be colder than here, but our 7#er prefers the cold over the hot. She loves snow. We don't take her out much, but she likes to potty in the snow. She prefers snow over rain. We have had no problems. We don't use a sweater or coat when she goes out to potty cuz she is not out very long. We put a coat on her if we take her places. If it is really cold, -0, I keep a sweater on her in the house. We visited my daughter in Minneapolis over Christmas once, and Sophie had a sweater on the whole time. She did just fine.;) |
I live in ND and have those horrid cold winters. No matter how hard I've tried, I've never been able to pee pad train my two. Maddie has a very thick coat and is fine with a sweater or jacket, but Libby get's so cold she can't walk. I've just ordered a snowsuit from Pocomut and it will even have feet in it, so that should help Libby out. I dread winter...hate it more every year! |
I will tell you how I did it with Jasmine. I bought a plastic box from walmart about 4" tall. I had to cut a hole in the side (Jasmine was about 12oz when we started she is now just a little over 1 lb ). Then I put a puppy pad in it. We was crate training at the time. Everytime she came out of the crate she was put in the box and not let out till she went. After eating back to the box. After playing back to the box. If she started sniffing to the box she was. I would say with in 2 weeks she was going to the box 95% of the time by her self. I was surprised how fast she picked it up. You just have to stay with it the same as you do when you are training them to go out side. If yours is already trained to go out maybe when she goes to the door you could just take her to the box. Good luck. |
We live in Ontario- LOTS Of snow... Layla wears a coat and usually a sweater underneath.. she would stay outside in the winter all day if i let her.. she LOVES it... i suggest keeping the hair on her belly short- otherwise LOTS Of snow balls :p Thanks to the suggestions on here.. if we are going out to "play" i put a towel in the dryer so it is nice and warm when we come back in and i can melt the snow off her belly :p Enjoy her first winter :) we get this jacket from petedge. PetEdge: Casual Canine Snow Parkas with Knit Scarf I love it because unlike most dog coats- it has sleeves! |

Thanks for all the tips! I have a parka for her with a hood already. I tried boots on our last dog and she wouldn't wear them so I didn't invest in them for this dog. Our last dog did ok if I didn't let the groomer cut the fur off the bottoms of her feet in winter, I guess it was like furry boots?:animal-pa But some days were just to cold no matter what. I did use pee pads when I was housebreaking our Yorkie, maybe just put one by the door or in a box by the door? She won't go out in the rain, she acts like she's sugar and she'll melt. LOL This will be our first winter with her maybe she too will like the snow. I'll just have to be real carefull on the really cold days. I always watch them or go out with them. |
It was fall when I got Bea and the breeder had already started pad training as I had asked as the winters in my area are really cold. Worked well as Bea wouldn't even go outside last winter and she hates to wear clothes. I take her to work so the pads work well there too. When spring came this year she housetrained herself to go outside when we are at home, (likes to play in the yard) but still uses the pads at work. With winter coming again most likely she'll go back to the pads at home again. Kind of handy having her trained both ways. |
