Ok this is gross but i need advice So bowie is only 3 months old but i noticed something strange last night....... He bottom smells fishy, like actual fish and im confused. Isnt it too early for him to get his anal glands drained? i havent had him groomed yet. Is there anything i can do?:( PS He is still annoyingly barking at ava anytime he is around her, for hours non stop harassment. I still dont know how to handle this. Ava, btw, is with me every other week so im really at a loss. HELP |
I would have thought about anal glands, too. |
Put some change in a can or empty bottles of water... and shake it when he bark(I read that on on tread here last week). It is helping for my dogs . Now WASH your dog REALLY good. If the smell doesn't go away..I would go to the vet for a little check up.. You probably have to go in a few weeks for his next shot anyways. Good luck |
Hmm, have you changed his food lately or added anything new? If he's a puppy, it sounds like maybe his glands may be irritated. If possible, you do want to avoid getting in the habit of having a human empty them - bc, ideally, they shouldn't really fill up too terribly unless they're eating something that isn't agreeing with their system, or if there is something structurally amiss. Otherwise, a dog's nice firm poo should push out anything in the glands, thereby avoiding human intervention. :) |
YES! We have started mixing some hard food with his soft food. |
Thanks for this thread! I've had the same thing happen a few times with Layla, but after a day or two the smell goes away and I always wondered why it was there in the first place. Looks like she probably ended up emptying her anal glands herself. |

The vet told me that some puppies don't push hard enough when they poop, and don't empty the glands on their own, so consequently they fill up. It is indeed a fishy smell. Joey needed some help with this for about first six months, and if the glands weren't emptied, he did a little scooting thing on the floor. I think it's best if the vet shows you the proper procedure, if done wrong, you can push the contents further up, and this can lead to a serious problem. This is automatically done by some groomers, however many vets believe it's not necessary unless your dog has a problem. Joey outgrew this condition, and hasn't had any problems with it for over 1½ years. |

My bet is the glands. I got Murphy at about that age and he'd walk with his back end out to the side, almost like it was going to surpass his head. LOL When I took him to the vet she did his glands. Said they were full but not too bad. |
Anal glands would be my first guess here as well. They do indeed produce a rather noxious odor. I would just have your vet or even groomer give them a look! |
