Hurricanes & Yorkies :eek:We have just survived Hurricane Gustav! I have 3 yorkies and let me tell you, they were really freaked out by the storm and I have to admit, so was their Mom. We live in Baton Rouge and as you may know, we were hit really bad! We were lucky, we are all ok, and our house, thank God, had no major damage. My 3 babies are finally feeling and acting normal as of today. I swear Bosley Beamer had a minor nervous breakdown, Baby Zoey stressed out so bad that I really thought she was going to die on me, and Lulu did fine (since she had been through this before) I think because she is older and she thinks she is the leader. Any one else from La. whose furbabies went through the same thing? Would love to hear your stories. Hopefully, everyone is ok and your power is back on. Lulu, Bosley Beamer, & Baby Zoey's Mommy |
glad to hear youre all ok. |
I am glad to hear you are all Ok there... It's Florida here, and we've been through some rough weather too. I didn't have my yorkie when Katrina came, but I had my boxer. She is epileptic and also had part of her jaw removed due to a very agressive bone cancer. Amazingly, we all could sleep through Katrina ( we have hurricane resistant windows, but the noise was incredibly intense even though). I had medications handy for any bigger stress , but never needed them, thank God. However, Hurricane Wilma came about 3 weeks later, and my Bella had a seizure a few hours before the stronger winds hit our region. I could control her without Valium, but I was really scared, not for the winds, but for what could happen to her. Well, a few hours later we were all very tired and the winds stopped, and that's all what happened. Animals are very sensitive to weather changes, and we must pay attention to their clues when it comes to hurricanes. I have Rescue drops with me at all times, that should help them relax without having to go to stronger meds. Stay safe ! Ana |
Yes, I agree that animals can sense the storms. Glad to hear you are ok as I know Florida has had their share of some horrible hurricanes. And thanks for the info on the medication as we are now preparing for Ike. :( Nancy |
hit by the eye on the coast! Hi all,I just posted on another thread & saw this one later, just copy & past on this one. I live in Bourg, LA 12 miles from the coast & 2 miles from Houma, LA. Yes the eye of the Hurricane hit us. We evacuated to a Caddo Lake Cabin in Uncertain, Texas. (west of Shreveport, LA) with 5 Yorkies & Lexi is pregnant and is due on the 14th in one week. Hurricane Ike is heading straight for us now!!! We got home yesterday to No Electricity, No Running Water, No Sewage & No Phone service & Barely Cell Phone service!!! We now have everything back but Electricity - Rumors are 3 weeks or more!!! We are trying our best to not crack under pressure. This has to be the most stressful time of my life worring about Lexi in her last 2 weeks of pregnancy. Stormy & Kylee have been fighting like cats & dogs since we left a week ago. The 3 youngest get car sick - my Vet recommended no food or water 10 hrs before leaving & give them Benidryl. only one vomited on the way to Texas. We had to bring Lexi to Marshall Animal Hospital Friday for her X-rays - 5 puppies - he said she should not have a problem with the pups sizes. Our Home weather the Hurricane very well. We lost shingles, facia board, vinyl boxing, parts of our wooden fence, 2 trees, parts of the swimming pool deck. The house was suppossed to be going on the Real Estate market last week - so we can start building our new house. OH Well - more delays!!! |
I'm glad that you're all ok. I have a friend who lost one of her dogs during a storm due to a heart attack. The poor dog was petrified and my friend did everything she could to try to keep him calm but he died. It's good to have something on hand to help calm them. |
We are in North Louisiana, but we did get some wind and rain. Bad weather just makes Baxter and Cooper burrow under the covers a lil deeper and stay in bed a little longer....Darcy doesn't do as well. I actually went to the vet a few weeks before and got some tranquilizers for her (just 1/2 of one at a time) because she literally scratches and trys to climb the walls when there is bad weather. It is horrible, none of us get any sleep, and she refuses to sleep in the bed with us...whoever had her before must not of allowed it. She will cuddle on the bed with us for 5 minutes tops, then she walks to the edge and crys for us to put her down.... We had some shingles blow loose or something, and some water leaked in 2 bedrooms. We are still waiting on State Farm to come out. I'm so glad you made it! Amy |
Glad to hear you're okay...:) |
And I thought I had it bad with my three yorkies? Hopefully Lexie will do great with her puppies. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. And yes, just knowing that Ike is heading this way and a more powerful storm is very stressful. And like you I have my house on the market and now I am thinking, who the heck would want to buy a house in Baton Rouge now! Oh well, good luck to you and hope you get your electricity back soon. All in all the state has done a magnificent job with all this chaosl. Nancy |
Eaglez28, please watch Lexi closely. Ike may be heading your way after he clears Cuba; if so, the drop in the barometer may push her into early delivery; big storms will do that. In any event, ya'll over there on the Northern Gulf Coast stay safe. |

:cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer: Well we have people that live farther down the bayou than I do. It usually takes storms to get them to move further up the bayou to my area. State Farm's adjuster is not scheduled to come to my house for 4 weeks. Good Luck to ya'll!!! |
after reading stuff like this im soooooo glad i live in the uk:( glad everyone is safe:thumbup: |

Well, We had it rough for Katrina. However I did not have my lil Bailey; I had my Baxter though (who I might add is a chihuahua). So, when we evacuated this time we took him and my Bailey to Tn. My poor Baxter :(......it breaks my heart because he is so nervous all of the time. All my lil man did was cry cry cry :(. He hates the car; he hates being in an unfamiliar place.....his poor lil nerves. We are waiting on Ike right now :(. We have no clue what to expect about this one but we are awfully nervous :(. Stay safe and take care! |

I tried the childrens Benedryl on all of them on ride up to caddo lake. my Vet recommended .8 ML for 3 1/2 lbs ( i used a infant Tylenol dropper) I gave them each the same dose - they range in weight from 3 1/2 - 5 lbs. Lexi is pregnant at 8 lbs 12 ozs right now - normal weight 6 1/4 lbs. They slept most of the way. I also use the Benedryl for the 4th of July Fireworks - Lexi & Kylee are Very nervous on the 4th. |
glad you are all ok... we are in Denham springs, and got it BAD here... I am THE ONLY ADDRESSS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITHOUT POWER.. UGGGGGG.... MY puppies still have not figured out what is going on cuz we are still on generator power, they are so much more clingy than usual... THEN a Skink got in my bedroom today... MAN, how gross... and Tootie is STILL looking for him... haha I am very thankful tho, that we are all ok and I didnt suffer any damage to my house..lost lots of trees but the house is ok.. As we were leaving for Gustav, stopped by the vet to pick up Gizmo's Acepromazine. Instead of the usual 6 doses that lasts for months, we were only given 2. One for leaving and one for the trip home. They were trying to conserve for all the other pets in the area and were running low. I used children's Benedryl on Bubba, he's 7 months and did well..they both stlled down and slept on their pillows the whole way. While evacuated gizmo was hurt and had to scrounge thru this tiny town for a bottle of baby asprin, so will never be without that now either. Heading out to the vet for scripts today. Good luck everyone with Ike. |
glad to hear everyone is doing ok and yes!! Hurray for Power being on! I hope Ike does turn away because I don't think my babies can take anymore. They are finally back to their old selves- playing, eating, and all the doggie things that they love to do. Let me know when Lexi has her babies. Hope all goes well for her during these trying times.... Keep safe everyone from La. Nancy |
