first time buyer of a Yorkie hi all, new member from canada, about to buy a 1 year old yorkie, 2 questions, 1> will she be ok with an 18mth old and 2, owner states that she 10lbs at a year old, is this possible. tia |
Welcome to YT. If you have young children the largers Yorkies are perfect. Out Teddy is 16 lbs and weighted 14 by 1 year. The bigger one don't get hurt as easy and are much better to have around children. Good luck with your new baby. |
thanks for ur quick reply, so it is possible for a female yorkie to be 10lbs at 1 year old? |
Hi and welcome to YT. You've come to the right place for answers. |
Tia Welcome to YT yes it is very common for a yorkie to weigh that much at the age of one year. Please be very careful with your 18 month old and with your yorkie. Your 18 month old may want to love on the yorkie and the yorkie may not respond like wise which can result to bigger issues .... Yorkies are very good tempermant dogs but no one dog is alike. Just be very careful for the safety of your child and for the safety of the yorkie. You will need to be present at all times. Your child is too young to be around the yorkie by themself... GOOD LUCK and POST PICTURES SOON! HUGS |
would it be better to wait for a puppy then? |
Just my opinion I would wait till your child is a little older or YES I would get a puppy verses a adult dog:) With a puppy you must be very careful your child does not hurt it because yorkies are babies with fur :D |
thanks for ur advice, in the safety of both my babe and the dog, you talked me out of it. |
Definitely get a yorkie but wait just a little time. STAY on this website and get eduacted and informed. I have been here since JAN and I have changed my mind on breeding showing and alot of things so I know for a fact I have learned some things.... I would definitely get a yorkie but I would give it some time. A yorkie is like having a new born .. :D HUGS and good luck on your decision |
Tia I am glad I was able to help! |
they come in all shapes and sizes |
Hi! Welcome to YT. Like Bleu Boy's mom, I learned so much from this site AFTER I got my Yorkie. I wished many times I had found it sooner, so you are way ahead of the game!! I think it's wonderful for kids to grow up with dogs, but I agree 18 months is a little bit young. Only because I know how much work an 18 month old baby is to keep out of things. A yorkie puppy is in a sense alot like an 18 month old baby, only worse sometimes 'cause you can't put diapers on them..hehe Definitely wait till the baby is old enough to understand how to treat a living puppy AND knows that the "presents" puppies leave aren't a snack. |
Hi there and welcome to YT. in my opinion, I would rather have a yorkie who is over a year old with young children, or wait until the kids are older. I'd visit the Yorkie several times before m aking any decisions. I would also bring my child to see how the dog responds to my child. Your going to want a loving Yorkie who is tolerant. My Suzi Yorkie is 6 months old. She is very energetic and playful. But, likes to playbite. If I had a toddler I would be worried that Suzi could bite too hard on the baby. THat would concern me. I'd be using a pen all the time and unfortunately have the dog in there. the baby comes first. Her/his needs have to. At least with an older dog you could get A good idea how the dog's temerment will be. :aimeeyork |
