Ugh oh - barking (& peeing?) for attention!
 

We've had Roxy for just over 3 weeks now, and generally she's a really great dog, but in the past week or so we've noticed a problem with her.........

If she is not being paid any attention (ie: if I am on the computer, or trying to watvch TV or something) Roxy will bark at us because she wants to play - fine this is understanable, but sometimes we are just to busy to play with her at the moment. We may have been playing with her before, and she was either biting us too hard, or just went and started playing with her toys by herself, so we'll get up and sit on the couch, and then she'll bark to get out attention again. We're trying not to respond to the barking and give her the satisfaction of getting our attention because she's barking, but the last 3 days in a row she's messed in the house right in front of us, and she knows she's not supposed to. She has been potty trained for close to 2 weeks now, and she knows that she has to go outside. She knows that we'll open the door if she sits by it or barks, so sh can go to the bathroom. Today she even pooped behind the couch while my husband was sitting on it, and this was about 2 mins after she went pee outside! A few hours later she was back to pooing outside. We probably went at least a week without an accident and now this is happening!

Does anyone have any tips on what to do if we just can't pay attention to her when she wants us to. I don't want her to become a clingy needy dog, so I don't want her to be ruling us, it's us that will rule her........

Sorry I can't help with the pee and poo situation, but as far as barking for attention, I guess they are all the same, Max does it all the time, and he can be VERY persistent :eek:

Perhaps you could put her in a cage or ex pen while you are busy love.

We use a crate when we aren't keeping a close eye on Wrigley. He whines a little at first, but if we drape one of our shirts over the front of the crate he is quite, then when we are able to watch him again we get him out and he is back to his excited self :)

How have you taught her to tell you that she needs to go pee?

Bark? touch you?

She may have asked but you thought it was in play.
She may have a UTI and need to pee more and ask more.
Could be attention getting the barking so going outside needs to be on either go to the door and ring a bell or spin.

Why can you not pay attention to her if she not aggressive why is it not ok to ask for love? do you not ask for hugs?
Clingy and needed are dogs that are not able to ask.. who follow you around and are not always in your face but totally close to you.

If you scold her for peeing and pooping in the house she going to go hide it from you.. your scary.

ingore it. clean it up and if you must go scream out side as you missed she asked to go out.

Start all over with treats and kind worda and train it again.

Be stern- mentally not physically! Ignore your dog completely when she barks for attention. Give a shht or whatever sound you do that means NO! Don't ever give in and pick her up to shut her up- you have validated that behavior. If it continues, leave the room and ignore the dog.

As for potty, then best defense is a good- catch 'em in the act defense. You may think the puppy is potty trained but they have lapses so don't relax yet. Watch the dog every minute that she has not recently gone potty (poop especially) and the minute they start to squat, grab them up, with your NO sound and put her out and let her continue outdoors and give love and praise and treats to beat the band! She will get it. BE STERN and CONSISTANT!

Never reward them for barking, if you are at the computer, and she barks for attention, don't give in. Wait till she's quiet for a minute or two, than give in.

Hmmm, If it were me, I would take the barking as -- go outside See, when I put Jazzie in her crate to sleep, she would bark, I would say, potty? outside potty? I'd take her outside, she would go tinkle. Put her back in, barking, back outside, soon she got the idea that hmm, this only works to get me outside so she gave up.
Even though your puppy seems to know that she goes outside, it takes at least 3 months or longer of repetitive training for them to get it that the house is not their toilet, some dogs take longer. In the books I have read, it states potty training is established within a year, some even argue that the trustworthy state happens at age 2 :confused: When you can leave them alone and they won't go in the house :confused:

Yes but if she is asking to go pee and this is the manner they have taught her to ask then she asking and your ignoring.
I agree if a dog is demanding attetnion to ignore but you best know if there is not a need to pee and or something else is wrong first.
Most of the world does not understand dog body language at all they place human views on it so a ton of info is missing and we tend to get it wrong..

Absolutely, you are correct, you must first rule out that the dog has to go outside, I was responding to this comment.
If a dog is barking to go outside in order to relieve himself, you do not have to wait a few minutes for him to stop. I really wish I understood some of Joey's body lauguage better. There are a few things he does like stick out his tongue, that I understand (that means he wants a treat), but there are probably lots other things that I'm missing.

If you want to understand dog boby language better.
There is a wonderful book called On Talking Terms With Dogs... Now lets se if I can spell her name right It is by... Turid Rugrass.... google the title.

It is a small book but if you want to read dog bodies well and fast it worth it and then some.

oh i agree. yes. ignore her. you are doing great in not giving her that satisfaction. you let her know that she earns your attention in a good way not in a negative one. this will become a habit if you let it. i would also def suggest crate training. i did with mine and she loves it. its like her own little bedroom.. i dont put her in there when shes bad though. its a positive place for her to relax
