New to Yorkies Hello all, During our recent evacuation from Hurricane Gustave, we had the pleasure of staying with a family that had three Yorkies. My daughter (who will be 15 in November) fell in love with them. I grew up with cats, so my knowledge about dogs is little to none. However, I was soooo impressed with how smart they are. They were truly a joy to be with. I have decided to find a female Yorkie for my daughter. My only concern is our family feline. Gabriel is 4 years old. He doesn't believe he is a cat. He thinks he's one of us! He's more of a "fraidy cat" than anything else. He's extremely docile and laid back. My question is: How will a Yorkie interact with a cat? Can the two cohabitate peacefully? |
I have a 14 yr old cat and 2, 3 yr old yorkies. They can definitely cohabitate. Mine never plays with the cat or anything but she is not afraid of them or anything |
I have 5 cats... Baron is 9 months old now. He's been in the family for 3 months. I have 5 cats.,7,5,5,3,and 1. I also have a 7 year old Papillion. Baron and Sammy think their cats and visa versa. The dogs play with the cat nip toys and steal the cats food when they can. The cats chase the dog toys and eat the dog food while Sammy growls @ them and they ignore him. When I mention treats for the dogs the cats come too. It's like a zoo here, But everyone gets along. My husband says they all are having an Identity Crisis and I should tell them who's a dog and who's a cat. Please, They're happy and healthy so that's all that matters. Your cat and dog will get along just fine. Introduce them slowly and stay with them when they're together for awhile so you can see how they react to one another. It'll work out. I hope this helps... Best Wishes, :aimeeyork Baron's Mom |
Thanks so much! It truly is a help hearing from those who have both felines and Yorkies. I sincerely hope that the two can cohabitate! My daughter will be devastated if they can't. She adores Gabriel and can't wait to get her "Bella". |
I also have a cat...a BIG cat! He is a Maine Coon and was our only pet for 11 yrs. HE doesn't bother with the furgirls but, the furgirls do not like him. They don't go after him unless we talk to him or mention his name...His name is McKenzi and we call him bubba...All we have to do is say the word bub or bubba and they attack him...He is quite patient with him. He could do alot of damage if he decided to attack back. I love my boy and would like to get a ragdoll someday but, unfortunately that probably will never happen. The "girls" rule the roost in this house. I know that yorkies and cats can get along but, mine do not. Good Luck! |
My very spoiled cat was 13 when we brought Hot Rod home. Granted she was very isolated and never had any other animals around other than her sister (who we lost the previous year). She hissed and snarled at him but ran away from him at 1.5 lbs. She was about 10 lbs. I believe she would have eventually come to tolerate him by ignoring him. Good luck. |
hi, and welcome to YT! Nice to see another "local" here on YT! We have a cat, well he doesnt know he is a cat, but he is.... both of my babies were brought in as tiny babies and they just think he belongs with them so we have no issues here... the cat is very tolerable of my Tootie-he likes to play with MeKitty.... we love our little herd! d |
Welcome to yt, I have two cats and three:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyorkgirls it take time little by little and always supervised them I will recommend to trim the cats nails too |
I have a 3yr old cat and both my puppies play and wrestle around with her, we supervise it thought because it can get a little rough and one of my puppies will get hurt, but they're always the ones that start it. I truly think they all love each other and don't mean to hurt one another, their just playing. It also helps that there all about the same size, give or that a few lbs. I don't have tiny ones, 6lbs and 10.5lbs the cat is 9lbs and fully clawed. When the cat has had enough she jump up on something where the dogs can't reach her. Welcome to YT you will learn alot here!! :welcome4: |
Sorry you had to evacuate. Hope things were okay when you got home. Hope your daughter finds her little Bella soon! |
