Shaving the ears Wrigley is 3 months old and his ears are not standing up yet... I asked the vet what things we can do at home to help them to stand up and he proceeded to tell me that Yorkie's ears do not usually stand up..... obviously he doesn't know about Yorkies :) I know that when my parents bred German Shepards they had to massage them to help them stand up, but I don't know if it is the same for Yorkies. Anyways I was thinking of doing the shaving method, is this something I can do at home or something a groomer has to do? And if I can do this at home, how do I go about doing it? I know that you are suppose to do it in a V, but other than that is there any certain type of razor I can use, one that I shouldn't use? Any other advice? |
You can use a regular razor...carefully..although clippers are easier. Shave 3/4 of the way down the backside. Some people also shave the inside...just the upper 1/3 or so. Trim the edges of the ears with scissors. You can hold the ear between your fingers to feel the edge...using the other hand to cut. You can also wet her ears and that helps define the edge for you too. |
So I can just use a regular electric razor? Sorry if that is a stupid question :) |

Do you mean an electric razor that has a straight head? Or a mustache trimmer? A mustache trimmer will work...the straight head razor I would check to make sure it actually cuts the hair...rather than pulls it out. Or a razor that has three swivel round type heads? These will not work. It pulls the hair out rather than cutting. Before I had clippers...I used a new regular disposable razor...and gently ran it on the backside. |
Like a razor that is like a mustache trimmer, certainly not the 3 headed one, I don't even wanna use one like that on my legs :) They look funny haha |
I do think the massaging helps too. I did that a lot when he would be sleeping in my lap. It can't hurt. |

That'll work perfect. Sooooo assuming you don't have a mustache....we'll keep it a secret you used it on Wrigley. ;) I used to use my nephew's clipper...he allowed me to do this...everything....but the butts. LOL. |
haha no secret being kept here, my husband's a good guy, and Wrigley already has him wrapped around his little paw :) Now I think using it on the butt would be pushing it a little too far for him though haha |
Trimming ears We just had our girl groomed this week. I had asked if the groomer could please cut her ears shorter, as at 7 months, they are still pretty floppy. She adamantly stated that her ears would never stand up now that she was so old. She comes from champion parents and both of theirs stand up. Silly me, I thought it would just happen when it happened. Well, needless to say... her ears did perk up some. They are not shaved though... I am a bit confused as to how much this would need to be done. Just curious, if they are not able to be up... I love her just the same, but if possible, how exactly do I encourage this to happen! Thanks in advance for your ideas! Cheryl & Mandy:aimeeyork:confused: |

It took Bailey's a lot longer than 7 months to stand. I didn't shave his ears, but I did trim the edges a lot.. I think any help to make them lighter helps. |
Suzi is 6 months and has her ears down more then up. She also would have one ear up and the other down. It was so cute . I am thinking of buying clippers today and learning how to groom myself. I was going to also shave her ears to make them lighter for her. Thanks for the advice. |

Rams thinks so too...even though Bailey broke up with her long ago. You never get over your first LOYL. |
