Craigslist yorkie~I need input!
 

I found a yorkie listed on Craigslist this morning~I'm not even sure what made me look but there it was. I have emailed this person and he's 11 mths old, not altered, no papers $300. Why did I even email this person because now that I'm interested I'm worried its a scam. How can I tell????

post the listing and let us see it,

You probably know its a scam when you hear from them. If they ask for money upfront or western union then its a scam.

Perhaps you could ask for her vet's phone # to verify it's health.
I would do that before ever purchasing another yorkie.
If it's on the up and up I would think the owner would be more
than happy to give it to you knowing her pet will be going into a home
that cares.

Well I just went back and it's been flagged! I'm going to ask for vet references~that's a really good idea. I have a feeling its a scam. We have been going back and forth for a while with questions. I finally asked for a picture and I was sent a picture of some yorkie because they don't have a camera or cellphone with camera. :rolleyes:

Yes. I consulted with a lawyer. But I don't want any problems. I have no way of paying for an attorney and go to court about this. I also don't have more $$ to get a new apartment.

If you have a lease that says you can have pets, the new owner cannot evict you for having a pet. Your lease is good and the terms cannot be changed by the new owner. Have you spoke to them about this?

I found this picture on the internet. I don't have a digital camera or camera phone to get a pic of him. You would not be disappointed if you saw him though. Brown and black. Very standard Yorkie.

I don't have any pics online but he is similar to the picture of the dog at the very bottom of the picture that is attached. Just smaller. I just had his haircut today so he is fresh and ready to go to a new home.

He does not fight at all. He loves playing with other dogs. He was with a VERY dominant female yorkie and they didn't have a problem. She told him to stay in his place and he did. He is currently being boarded at a dog daycare and is with about 12 other dogs all day and does very well.

I am in the west loop area. I can meet you somewhere if you can take him today.

He is friendly with other dogs. He does like to establish dominance at first by growling but has never attacked. He is small but likes to be "top dog". He is in dog daycare for the last week being boarded and is getting along very well with about 12 other dogs.

I was served a 5 day notice for eviction because a new owner bought our building and we aren't allowed to have dogs anymore. The adoption fee is to cover his boarding bill at dog daycare.

I am in Chicago but can meet you halfway somewhere. He is not neutered but can arrange a free neuter with PAWS or Anti-Cruelty for you. The only paperwork he has is the shot records. He is small. about 6 lbs.

Asking for a phone number won't necessarily work since they could have you calling a friend that's involved in the scam. If you do get a phone number also ask for the name of the vet and do a cross check using Yellow Pages Online Phone Book Local Business Listings Directory | DexKnows.com ™ to get proof that you are actually calling a vet. Also, if the owners are out of the country and are selling the Yorkie because of the weather being bad for dogs then it's a scam.......

Do not under any circumstances give personal info..... name, bank accounts, credit card numbers...... don't mail them a check since that's all they need to drain your checking account.

I would never give personal informaiton or banking info. They say it is due to a new landlord. I just emailed for a vet and groomer number. They also said he was just groomed so this should not be a problem to provide their name and info. They also claim hes in doggie day care so they should be able to provide that as well. We will see what they have to say! I will keep you posted.

If he is willing to meet you and exchange pup and money then it might be legit. That is the only way I would do it

I would also be very cautious about meeting a complete stranger. Especially that stranger knows that you have money when meeting with them. There are news reports stating people doing business in Craigslist ends up getting robbed. I would verify the that they doggie day care is legit, if you are going to meet with him bring other people along with you (make sure your friend is big and looks intimidating). Also ask to see if you can have a play date to make sure that your dog and his dog will get along, make sure you illiterate that you are not bringing any money you and that you only want to meet the dog.

The ad was flagged because Craiglist rules forbid you to sale animals. Even if its rehoming, as long as the transaction involves money and there is an animal its forbidden.

When I asked for vet and groomer info I have not heard back since. I'm still waiting for a reply. I was also thinking he might be stolen as well.

You have very good points and I have been playing out the what if in my head all morning. I was planning on bringing both of my grown sons. They are BIG BOYS 6'5" and 6'3" as bodyguards~just the sight of them filling up my little SUV would be "impressive". ;)
My next question to her was going to be to meet the puppy at the doggie daycare they said he was staying at, this would have been a safe place to meet and be able to interact with both dogs as well. I was playing out several senarios in my head.
I don't think I have to worry about any of this since they have not responded back after I asked for vetting and groomer references. I figured it must have beena scam but didn't want to see a little guy go into the pound or worse.

If I hear anything more I will keep everyone updated.

craigslisters flag ads when you are asking more than 75 to rehome..they see or hear 300 and go into reselling mode and flag you

I do not think this is legit at all. :mad: Once I started asking for vet and groomer details I never heard back from them! I kind of figured that it was not legit but wanted to see what would happen. People like this are just awful! I sure hope someone else did not fall from their scam!:eek:

Ahhhh, I'm so sorry! I just HATE this! I am so sorry if you have been dissapointed by this, but sounds like you have been pretty hip and careful from the start. you asked all the right questions, and there is nothing else you could have done.. This saying comes to mind.... If it's sounds too good to be true, it probably is... I'm so mad at these jerks!!

I am glad you were being careful on this. what got me is that they did not have a picture, and showed you one of a differet yorkie. To me, that is a red flag. So many scams out there, and they are so good at making it seem ligit. Some peopl ewill do just about anything for money. Yorkie's are a prime target. It is better to be safe then sorry. :aimeeyork

I personally think its a scam basically because he states he has NO Money. Ok so he has no money..but yet he's getting the dog groomed?? That sounds a little fishy to me. Craigslist has always scared me...i have never used it.

I'm not a fan of Craigslist either but I have been helping my son look for a job and he has been having some luck. I just happened to look today and it was the very 1st post that I saw. I just figured what the heck I might as well see what they have to say.:rolleyes:

In the very least I kept myself entertained for a short while going back and forth asking questions. I was waiting for her to bail and once I asked to meet and vet records "POOF" gone.

I have always been a pretty good judge of charector and I am the mom that ALWAYS FOUND OUT what was really going on. :wink: I guess that's why I am mom to everyone!

the fact that the guy said you could come over and see the pup makes me think it might be legit. However, not providing you with vet references is indeed a little fishy. I found my baby on a gumtree ad and it was completely legit. The guy I got him from was not a professional breeder but he swore up and down his female would develop some fatal disease if he got her spayed before her first litter. And you could tell the guy was all over that dog... The puppies were well cared for in his home, slept with him, but he just couldn't afford to keep 8 furbabies!

I am very careful when I use Craigslist. A lot of scams and stolen pups.
I once went to look at a yorkie girl that was only about 10 weeks. They had her since she was 6 weeks old. They told me she was $600 and registered. I got there and she was $800 and you had to pay the breeder more to get papers. The lady thought it was funny to show how the pup would bite you if you put her diaper on. (Growling and snapping)
I was glad she was rehoming the pup but doubt she was going to if the pup was already being taught it was okay to be aggressive. :(

I got Darla off of Craigslist. I thought it was probably a scam. The ad said her owner had to go into a retirement home and the granddaughter could not have dogs where she lived. They only asked for $100 but she wanted references and me to bring my vet paperwork to show I take care of my other dogs. I met her in a public place and took my mother in law with me. She gave me Darla's vet records. And I brought Darla home. I am skeptical about most yorkie posts on CL. But this one was legit.

I guess you just never know if its legit or not. That's why I figured I would respond and see what happened. Too bad there are just so many scammers in this world, you just never know who you can trust. I think I would have had a heart attack if I would have gone to meet someone. I definetly would have taken both of by boys with for "protection". I'm glad that you found Darla and everything worked out for you. It's very sad when someone needs to be placed into a retirement home and needs to give up their pet.:( But Darla seems to have found a great place to live.:)
