rescuing 2 maltese any advise? My daughter has been trying for almost a year to rescue 2 maltese. These poor little things are being kept outside most of the time.. It seems that this couple divorced and they belonged to the wife. The wife left them behind and the man doesnt care about them.. My daughter has been trying to get him to give them to her for months. he was holding back because he seemed to want money for them... Anyway he called my daughter today to ask if she still wanted them . She told him I have a maltese that is spoiled rotton and if he would give them to me I would take very good care of them.. Anyway he said a few months ago they were up to date on there shots.. but today he told her they are filthy, and all matted... Mine are up to date on all shots , but I was a little concerned about bringing them in the house... I am planning to work on getting out the mats. I will use clippers to trim the short and give them baths...Then I will search for good homes for them.. Should I be concerned about them giving mine anything if everyone has had all there shots? Any advise? |
IMO if they are updated on their shots the only thing they can bring into your home may be fleas and ticks if they are living outdoors. I certainly would keep them seperated from my own for a day or two at least until you can verify they did have their shots. Of course a bath and grooming like you mentioned. I bet they are beautiful when cleaned up. Poor babies. Thank you for stepping in to rescue these two. I am sure they will be happy to be bathed. Good luck, P.S. I would check also for any parasites. Some of these buggers are transferrable. |
TY I am ready to take care of the flea problem, I just hope they are Up to date on shots and he can supply me with that info. or at least give me the name of there vet. so I can check.. It gets pretty cold in Maine and my understanding is that they were outside in a shed or something.. Poor little things.. |
Bless you for trying to rescue these little dogs. I can't imagine Maltese being outdoors all the time, let alone in Maine. Lady won't even step outside in the rain! Unless this man can show you proof of vaccination, assume that they will need all their shots updated. I would do what most rescues do - bring them directly to your vet for an exam before even bringing them home. Your vet can give them each a Capstar pill to kill any fleas instantly. If they are matted, you will probably have to shave them down completely. Maltese have very different coats than Yorkies - much more difficult to keep mat free. Keep us updated! |
can't believe he kept them outside but that is so sweet of you to rescue them....can't wait to see pictures...hehe |
Hopefully they "are" up to date on shots and don't have kennel cough. Your very thoughtful for helping these babies. Bless you. |
What a relief you must feel to have them finally !!! I am sure you will clean them up properly...My friend rescued a 1 yr old poodle from a family and took him straight to the vet (called on the way)to check him out...He was so 'overgrown' he had a big mat flipped over his eyes...He couldn't see....The vet kept him overnight and shaved the little guy...He is the sweetest and handsomest guy around....I'm sure your 2 will do fine.... Thank you |
I have a maltese myself so I know there hair is different then a yorkie.. I am hoping he can show me there up to date on shots.. I spoil my babies and they get whatever they need, but I really cant afford vet bills for any others. My plan is it clean them up and spend the weekend with them and hopefully find homes for them next week.. I cant keep any more myself.. If either one appears to have health issues I may have to call the shelter or try to find a Maltese rescue.. Which I dont know if there is any around here.. IM hoping for the best, but I have to at least try.... |

I'd suggest contacting Mary Palmer if you would like to get them in the rescue program. They probably both need the basics like Lady did, shots, dental, bloodwork, etc. That can get expensive. Northcentral Maltese Rescue, Inc. |
Well we didnt pick them up today. My daughter called the man that is giving them to us and he was busy , so he put it off until morning.. I did find out however that it is 3 maltese we are going after not 2 ... 2 females and 1 male, none of them have been fixed and only one has had any shots... My daughter wants to wait until we pick them up and see what there like before we make any decisions about them. I do have a couple people that show interest in giving them homes.I guess my main concern is to sucessfully get them out of the environment they are in right now.. I think about them being outside all the time..:( |
Best of luck to you. I hope you can get them away from that man, to leave them outside:mad::mad: |
