Is this a socialization issue? Yesterday, we took Diva over to my friends house to see Teddy (her puppy). Now, I realize that Teddy had been with his new owners for over a month, but I honestly thought Diva would be excited to see him. Boy was I wrong. Diva was not at all happy about meeting up with her son again. Teddy got so excited when he saw her that he ran right to her and started climbing on her. Diva freaked out, jumped on the couch and proceeded to throw up on their couch!! She then climbed to the back of the couch and did her best "I'm not looking at you," routine. Teddy just kept trying to get to her while she did her best to pretend he did not exist. So this got me wondering if this is an issue that I caused. Diva has never liked other animals. We joke and say that she thinks she's human. She ignores our cats, never played with Coco and acts like she can't stand for another animal to touch her. When she had her puppies though, she was a wonderful attentive mother. I kept her away from strange animals when she was puppy because I didn't want her getting hurt or sick, but she has always been around our cats. It's not like she was totally isolated from all other animals. I want to make sure that Teddy does not end up like this if it's something that I did wrong in socializing her. Does anyone have any ideas? |
It's likely neither she nor Teddy even remember their "relationship". Teddy is puppy...he wants to play with everyone...she is older and isn't interested in that puppy stuff. If it means anything...when I had Trace...the breeder who was a friend told me...his mom would still look for him (he was a singleton)...brings her over. She hated him. He wasn't the puppy she was looking for and he smelled like CATS. To socialize them...you really need to expose them to other dogs all the time. The dogs mine see now...they see frequently. |
Gracie Ruth's mom, Lola, gets along fine with Gracie. We've dog-sat both her parents for a long weekend at our place and we've gone to visit at their home. However, the one time that Lola went to the other pups home she tried to attack them. So I don't know what's up with that other then maybe it is something with the smells. Gracie does still very much act like a baby when she's with Lola, but there's usually 4 or more dogs around when they visit so she isn't focused on just her mom. |
Sounds like Teddy is doing just fine and is acting like a normal pup. Your question about Diva seems to be the 'nature vs. nurture' one. She does sound a little stand-offish if she never played with Coco. Everyone, dogs and people, are born with certain temperaments but are influenced by their environment. It is common for doggie parents to lose that 'motherly instinct' for their pups, even if they're kept in the same home. I have two mothers here with their daughters that I've kept. Caty doesn't have much to do with her daughter but Bonnie, on the other hand, still mothers her daughter at 8 months old. I know you recently lost Coco but if you have any other dogs besides Diva at home, you may want to try leaving them to each other more so Diva is not so dependent on you for all her companionship. Depending on her age, Diva may be set in her ways and might always be a true 'diva' :D. |
Socialization needs to began at an early age. They need to be exposed to all kinds of dogs and people all the time. I am sorry your Diva was so upset she vomited .It was too much for her to be around a puppy who would not leave her alone. Even though it was her offspring. there was no connection. Work with Diva on socialization, and you can distract her by using treats. It is going to take time, and consistency. Hopefully she will get accustomed to other dogs. My Suzi is timid around other dogs. She does sniff a dog, and then is done. I also need to work with her. :aimeeyork |
Family Love When Artie & Abigail had a Litter of 3 puppies, I kept the youngest and the smallest runt female, her name is Tiffany Aloha aka Pom Pom she just turned 2 yrs. old this past Tuesday. Her & Abigail are very close, she was a Good Mother and still is, actually all 3 are literally inseperable. She still tries to lick her clean on her face and any flea bites? In fact they sleep together cuddled up and Pom Pom follows her around like a buddy/shadow. They have never been aggressive in any way towards me or each other and they never act jealous of each other either. We used to live next door to the Dog Park, so we were there every day, so they were "Socialized" alot! All Yorkie's have different Personality's it sounds like she is the "Alpha" in your Pack? |
