Weight of a 12 week puppy?
 

Within two weeks, my Niles has gained a whole pound bringing him to a total of 4lbs. He gets _a lot_ of time to run around and he eats normal. The breeder said he would only get up to 6 or 7 lbs... but I cannot imagine a this 3 month old only gaining two pounds more.
So, what's the normal weight of a 12 week old?

I got Tila in May. Shes six months old. She weighs 4 pounds. Every puppy is different, could be going through a growth spurt. Tila gained two pounds since I've gotten her, she's 100% healthy, runs around, eats whenever she wants. She gains her weight steady, like around 4 ounces a week since I had her. If your puppy gets to be 6 or 7 pounds, thats still little. I have another dog he's 2 and hes a terrier mix, he's 8 pounds. He still looks small as well, he's just got looooong legs. As long as your baby is healthy thats the best thing. And as I said before every puppy is different, if you read some older posts you'll see a lot of weight differences at that age. :)

Mika was 5.5lbs at 12wks:eek: Now she is 8lbs at 5 1/2 months, I'm guessing she will reach about 10-11 lbs full grown. They say to double the 12 week weight to get an estimate of adult weight. Your little one might get to 8-9 lbs full grown. But this isn't a hard and fast rule some yorkies don't quite double their 12wk weight and some go way beyond! Don't worry about it so long as your baby is fit, healthy and happy :D:D:D

There isn't really what you'd call a "normal" weight. It just varies with the dog. Did the breeder say what they were basing the adult weight estimate on?

A pound in two weeks seems to be quite a bit. What food do you have him on? That doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. It just seems a lot of weight to gain in that short a time.

He's probably perfectly normal. Just make sure you have him on a good food and he gets plenty of exercise. Not all Yorkies stay at breed standard weight. Even if he gets to 8-9 pounds, that's still a small dog, and he'll bring a lot of joy to your life.

I bought Dora, and she weighed 1 pound 3 ounces. Now she is almost 4 months old, and she weighs around 2 pounds - 2 1/2 pounds.

I PRAY she gets to be a "bigger yorkie". Other than the fact that I think bigger yorkies are SO adorable, I have a chihuahua that weighs barely 2 pounds, and he might even be a little less than two pounds! And he is an adult.

It is SO hard to keep a smaller dog safe.. You worry about everything from jumping off the couch, to stepping on them, to not being able to let them play/wrestle with other dogs. I would NEVER EVER suggest a tiny (1-2 pound) dog to anyone. Hypoglycemia is also a HUGE factor.

I am sure you will love yours either way! And I dont think their is any way to determine how big one will get, until they are grown;)

Wrigley was 1lb 13oz when we got her at 12 weeks and she's 6lbs even now! So you never know! The breeder and our vet thought she would be 4-4 1/2 lbs tops and she's not overweight either!
Our neighbors Yorkie was almost 4lbs at the same age and he's around 12-13lbs now.

Emme is 12 weeks old today and she is still 1.9 lbs. We will see what size she gets to.

My first Yorkie was a big Yorkie (his top weight being 16 lbs.) and he seemed a lot smaller at 12 months than this guy, so I was just wondering.

Niles is currently on Royal Canin Puppy Mini, I do want to switch him over to EVO but I just don't know when the switch will take place.

I found a web site a couple of months ago that advertises 1 1/2 - 2 pound Yorkies, and that is just abnormal. They aren't supposed to be that small, and it comes with its own set of problems. What really annoys me even more is that some people breed 2-3 pound females, and that is beyond irresponsible. I have a beautiful 3 pound female that I had spayed at about 14 months. Not because I wouldn't have liked another ten puppies that looked just like her, but because she's simply too little to have babies safely.

As KT said, they can't get on and off the sofa on their own, and it's very hard not to step on them if they're really little. I cannot count the times I've thrown myself in the floor to avoid stepping on one of mine. They tend to run under my feet rather than away from them, so it's often a choice of step on the dog or lose your balance and fall on the floor to avoid it.

The small ones are also very hard to keep track of outside. We aren't allowed to have fences in our subdivision, and there have been a couple of times that one of them has run into a next-door neighbor's yard. When that happens, they just look like a little black dot in the middle of the yard because they're so hard to see if they get very far away from you. I nearly had a heart attack one day when one went to investigate the neighbor's swimming pool. I was looking right at her but still didn't see her until she started walking around their pool deck and I saw movement.

Who says size doesn't matter ;)

:aimeeyork Uma weighed 3.8 lbs. when we got her. Just weighed by the Vet. today and she is 4 lbs. even. Yoko was 1.2 lbs. at 4 wks. we got her at 6 wks. and 1 wk. later she weighed 2.2 lbs. Vet. weighed today and at 12 wks. she is 3 lbs. even. Un predictable little Boogers!

Hi! my guy weighs exactly 4lbs at 12 weeks as well. i got him at 8 wks and he weighed 3 lbs. our yorkie will probably weigh anywhere from 7-9lbs.

i know size doesn't matter but i hope mine will stay under 10 lbs.

When I got trixie, she was under a pound. She gaines 1.10 in four weeks. but she stopped growing. In a month she has not gain an ounce. I am thinking, they go through grow spurs, and then stop growing for a while.

Your right! I've had pups at 8 weeks be 2# and not get over 4# grown... I do get the larger ones as well as the females I like to be bigger 6-9#... But these same dogs have pups that are 3-5#.. I get more people wanting the larger pups do to so many tinny ones have so many problems.. But this is not good either as larger ones can have same problems as the small one if the breeder dosen't know what they are doing and just mass production of sale able pups.. Your pup is large for it's age.. He will be a larger dog but you won't have to worry over some one stepping on him or him jumping to floor from you furniture... Also less likely to be sat on or stepped on.. My tinny ones I always scoop up and put where I can keep track of them.. Pups always want to be on your feet or around them.. Just love the pup you have and don't worry about his weight.. If you like the way he looks and he is smart and healthy, that's the thing. If you bought him under the guise of going to be a pouch puppy then that would be different.. Also I've run into breeders that don't feed their pups if they know they are going to be on the larger side... They starve them and when you get them they bloom to normal size they would have been in a short period of time. I knew one breeder fo poodles that fed macaroni to her pups so they would be small when bought!! UGH! I know of another person who shipped a dog in and it was 5 months old and weighed in at 3# and month later the dog weighed 7#.. The pup was skin and bones when it was shipped.. Know the breeder before buying..
