Excerise pen question Hi again, I have a question for anyone using excerise pens. I just bought one but haven't used it yet, and am debating on returning it. My yorkie...Pita...is 12 weeks old and I have been crate training her. There is usually someone home with her and the longest we have left her alone so far is about 2 1/2 hours. She screams and cries in the crate. Anyway, I bought the ex-pen but now am scared to use it because I have heard people say they can climb out of it?? Does anyone here use the ex-pen while they are gone at work or something? I was just considering using it for when we would have to be gone for more than a couple of hours. If you do use one, has your yorkie ever climbed out and how long have you left them in there? And for an update ( I had posted before worried about my new yorkie and our golden retriever) the dogs have actually started playing together. We have to keep an eye out though because our bigger dog Kaylie gets a little carried away. But it is getting better and they seem to like eachother.:) |
I doubt this will help much, but I have two that jump it and two that don't. I have 4 yorkies and a Golden Retriever named Penny. We are one big happy family. Welcome to YT..I'm from Indiana too, just north of Frankfort. |

Thanks for the fast response! I live in Chesterton about 15 minutes from Valparaiso, Indiana. It's nice to hear from you and that's so cool that you have a golden too!!:) |
1 Attachment(s) Welcome to YT. I have used and expen since January 08 and have never had a problem. We actually took the pen apart and attached it to his crate. This actually made the area a little bit larger. I don't think Hot Rod could climb out if he wanted to, but he is only about 3 1/2 lbs. |
I could not live with out mine, Kingston does not jump out yet |
We have one and it's fantastic! Selah doesn't climb out of it at all. |
We're gone too long during the day to crate Ella up the whole time, so we use an x-pen. She hasn't climbed out, but our breeder told us her older sister is quite the climber. If it gets to be a problem, there are covers you can put on the x-pen. They're supposed to block out sun for when the pen is outside, but it would also slow down a climber! |
well i have 4 yorkies...2 is climber and 2 are not...well not yet anyways...i am also looking for another xpen that does not have horizonatal bars for that is what they use to climb...so if anyone have one please please let me know where you got it from...i hate having to crate them while at work...but it is for their own safety...hehe |
love mine however what you paid matters Ive bought 4 to block my pool at 90 dollars a pop then I went to wallmart.com bought 1 more and paid 50.00 |

IMO - I would invest in a tall pen in order to make it last for years with your Yorkie. On a side note - our pen is metal and we are moving to a place with hardwood floors ... does anyone have any ideas what could be put along the bottom of the pen panels in order to protect the floor? |

There was another thread about exercise pens and I had voiced my concern about the horizontal bars because Elvis is a climber. This person said that her husband had installed plexi glass on the inside of the pen and that he had drilled little holes so that one can thread thru a plastic tie to secure it to the pen. This could be removed as well when needed. Sounded good to me. |
I didnt see how tall yours was? Mine is 30 inches tall and I now have 4 dogs, none of them can jump or climb it...They vary in sizes also from 2 lbs,3 lbs,4.5 lbs and 7 lbs.If its a short Xpen like 24 inches or even the shorter one around 18 inches then I would be a little concerned. If its 24" or taller, I would try it out for one day and see. Just make sure that you take your dog's collar off. Genie |
