Hello, I'm new and have questions Hi, I live in western KY and I have just purchased a yorkie puppy this weekend. The breeder said that he is 6 1/2 weeks old but he has NO teeth yet. I can see them in his gums but none of them have come out. Since I am going on vacation this coming week, I am leaving him there until I come back. I have never owned a yorkie but I thought all puppies get teeth in by the time they are 4 weeks old. Has anyone ever seen this or do you think he is younger than she says he is? He is eating moist food and seems healthy otherwise. Thanks for any advice you can give me on his teeth. |
a breeder gave you a pup at 6 1/2 weeks?!?!?!?!? pups need to be withtheir moms till at least 8 weeks, and for small breedes 12 to 14!! |
Welcome! Usually they have some teeth by then but I got My Chachi at that age also and he didnt have any so its not totally unusual. He did have teeth shortly after though so you should be on the look out for them |
he will get his teeth soon, but i am blown away! |
Whew, for a minute there i thought you had taken him home at 6 1/2 weeks. Yes he should definitely have teeth by 6 weeks. Are you sure that she is being honest about his age. sometimes breeders tell you they are older to make you think they are really small. If he really is 6 weeks and doesn't have teeth i would fnot take him without a vet check. Also you need to wait anothe 4 to 6 weeks before taking him home. Yorkies that are taken from their mothers too soon have a lot of issues. by 10 to 12 weeks he will be eating kibble and will have been socialized by his mother. If the breeder is letting him go sooner then she does not have the best interest of the puppy in mind. meanwhile, use the time to do more research on the problems connected with taking them too early. hypoclycemia being the biggest one. They can die in their sleep from that. |

if the breeder tells you that you have to soak their kibble in water or grind it in the blender they are not ready to go to new homes. |

I know how exciting it is to be bringing home a new puppy soon, however, waiting 12 weeks is reccomened for the yorkie breed. Mainly, because these puppies are so tiny that there is a chance of them developing Hypoglcemia. When they are stressed out , such as going to a new home, they often will not eat for too long of a time, which is dangerous. Also the socialization takes place with their litter mates and mother. If this time is missed then the puppy may have problems with biting, and trust . I got my Suzi at 9 weeks. I did not know that I should have waited. Also, your baby might even be a little younger then expected. :aimeeyork |

She said she was leaving him there yet and she should leave him there till he is a minimum of 10 weeks and 12 is better for the puppy. She said she was new so lets not go jumping on her to hard - lets try to help her and hopefully educate her - after all - we all had to learn . |
Your new puppy will get his teeth. It is not uncommon for a six week old puppy to not have teeth. it is also not uncommon for breeders in kentucky to let them go at six weeks. the papers are full of them every day. hardly anyone keeps them until ten or twelve weeks. i have lost many a sale because i don't let mine go until twelve weeks. Welcome to YT. I am in kentucky also. I know the culture here well and how the breeders do. but if you can get the breeder to keep him until at least ten weeks, it would be great. There are many issues they can have that young. Low sugar is one of them and I have found that my mom's really don't begin socializing the babies until around eight to ten weeks. they really do need that extra time with mama. |

I got Pippin when he was 7 1/2 weeks old and he doesn't have any issues at all. He does have an attitude at times but I read that all Yorkies have an attitude. He was about 1lb when I got him and was actually very healthy when I brought him home. He's now a year 1/2 and he's a good solid 8lbs which may seem like alot but according to his vet he's right where he's supposed to be weight wise, so I'm not worried. -Kelly |

yes she is new and she doens't know what scammers there are out there so I was pointing those things out to her. I never felt she was a fault or had done anything worng. It is ythe breeders responsibility to advise new owners, and not to sell them too quickly. So what is your reason for jumping on me. |
Oh how sad you must be to leave your new baby! His teeth will come soon |
Future Dental :welcome4::welcome4: I wouldn't be too concerned that he doesn't have teeth at six weeks. Some programs and specific puppies have very hard gums and the teeth don't penetrate as easily. You should plan to ask your vet about dental treatment and having retained baby teeth removed, just to prepare you for what may come. If you plan ahead and have retained baby teeth removed in a timely manner, like when you get the spay/neuter, your baby will have a better chance at adult teeth coming in with proper alignment. This means fewer dental problems later in life. I'm with everyone else on leaving him with mommy until at least ten weeks. The social skills mother will teach him are very important. Secondly he will be much less likely to have coccidia or hypoglycemia later on. Thirdly he may have had all three shot's and his immune system will be better prepared to ward off infection. In short....he'll be much better prepared for life with his new family. In the meantime you can research dog food, basic grooming tips and of course clothes, here on the site. Congratulations on your new family member!! |
Follow up to my introduction Thank you for all the answers about my puppies teeth. This lady had already taken the puppy off his mother at 4 weeks. She said that they start snapping at them at that time and she does that for their protection. She had already sold his siblings and I imagine he was still left because he doesn't have teeth. She would have let me take him at 6 1/2 weeks but I didn't feel that it was fair to bring him home and then go on vacation and leave him with someone else new. I don't want to stress him more than I have too. However, I now feel bad about leaving him there since his littermates are gone and he doesn't have his mother either. He will be almost 9 weeks old when I am able to pick him up. He is being kept inside in a baby playpen at her house. What kind of problems will he have since he was taken from his mom so young? I want to be as prepared as possible for anything that might happen with him after I get him home. |
How big is your new puppy ? It will make a difference if he he under 3lbs when you bring him home . The smaller they are the harder it is when they become stressed out or a big change occurs. Keep your baby on the same food the breeder has him on. Free feed him. Have Nutrical on hand incase he won't eat, or has not for a while .This will keep his blood sugar levels up while he is adjusting. Remeber that a very young, puppy is comparable to a infant. Your going to need to be there for him. AND give him much love, attention. He is going to be frightend, and lonely when you first bring him home. Until he bonds with you, he will be confused , and distressed. I don't know what kind of temperament he has, so i do not know how he will do. Just make sure your there all the time for him, so he knows he can trust you. It is better to go shopping before bring him home too. Have all the supplies ready when you take him home. Your doing the right thing by waiting until you get back home. 9 weeks is much better then 6 1/2 . |
Is your baby the runt? Reason why i ask is because Kioko was the runt of the litter and his teeth did not come in until around 12 weeks old...runts normally develop slower than the others...and please dont' bring your baby home until about 10-12 weeks old depending on how big he/she is at the point in time. |
Welcome you have got some good advice here allready  you will learn tons in here:aimeeyork |
