Hurricane Gustav Hi all, I just wanted to share my experience with this horrible hurricane with everyone! I live in Louisiana and many of you might already know, there's a horrible hurricane coming straight for me :( I am in central LA, so I am not on the coast, but it's still being advised that our area evacuate. We are leaving Monday and heading north to Forest City, Arkansas. We found a pet-friendly hotel, (best western) and will be staying until September 4th. I have never traveled out of state or stayed in a hotel with my furbabies! Does anyone have any advice for me? I will be traveling with my mom in one car, and the drive is about.. I'd say.. 5 hours. Any advice with maybe the hotel pet-etiquette? Anything special I will need for the hotel room stay? Thanks very much in advance! :) |
i dont know but be safe and take care. |
Wow!! I hope your house will be OK when you get back, how scary!! We don't have hurricanes out here in CA, only earthquakes!! As far as the hotel goes, be sure to bring some of their things from home like their beds, so they feel more comfortable. If you leave to go to Dinner or something, I leave mine in the bathroom at the hotel with a wee wee pad on the floor, just in case they have to go. So long as your's aren't barkers they should be fine. If you have a stroller bring it so you can bring them places during the day. I put a baby blanket over the top of mine and go into stores with them and everyone thinks it is just a baby stroller. I'm wishing you guys nothing but the best. |
I am praying that everyone is safe!! This is so scary! I think bringing their own beds will make them happy..plus blankets or things like that were they can cuddle. Be careful!! |
Blankets and pee pads! I've stayed in best westerns with Lucie, they can be a little pricey, depending on the area and stuff some of their prices vary. But make sure you have potty pads because some of them will check for potty stains when you leave (at least they say they do) Having blankets and toys can help them feel more comfortable. |
Wouldnt the hotels be cooperative in these kinds of situations? I would hope so. If not sneak the dog in. I hope everything works out and I really hope the storm dies down before it hits land. God bless |
I worked at Best Western as a receptionist a few years ago. They are very pet friendly, BUT I did want to add, that they DO NOT check for current vaccinations, so please be sure your pet is UTD on ALL SHOTS! We got complaints all the time about dogs getting sick (kennel cough) after staying, even though the housekeepers use disinfectant. Also flea meds BEFORE coming! And please dont leave them in the hotel alone, and if you MUST, leave a do not disturb sign on the door,OR put them in the bathroom in a crate,so the housekeepers dont accidently open the door, and the pups get out! That does happen sadly:( Good luck and I will pray for the safety of EVERYONE in the hit zone! Katie and puppies |
Wishing you all the best - I feel so bad for everyone in LA.....I can't believe we have another monster hurricane coming and I PRAY for you all that this one isn't going to pack the punch of Katrina. GOOD LUCK ! |
Take some carpet stain remover with you or some Petzyme or Nature's Miracle...... Our prayers are with you. |
My thoughts are with you and everyone in the hurricane's path. I can't imagine such a mass evacuation. I hope Monday leaves you enough time to evacuate safely. The suggestions here have been great. Here are a couple other possibles: * Nutrical. I always travel with this because you never know when they're going to get nervous in strange surroundings. * Food. If they are on a special diet or hard-to-find food, make sure you have plenty so you don't have to change their diets. * Chew toys. Good luck. |

When i'm travelling with Pixie she is in a travel carrier which is pretty roomy..I line the inside with a puppy pad and a towel and take a couple of extra towels to replace any soiled ones..I also take baby wipes...treats, a bottle of water and small plastic bowl. make sure you take everything you would normally need for her day to day..some toys to keep her occupied. Everything will be ok!;) |
We are all praying for you for a safe trip there and that you have a place to return to. We usually stay at Motel 6 and they are also pet friendly. Wee pads, lots of toys, treats and food. We take his pillow that he lays on. Remember, they will feed off of your fears. It is important especially as you are leaving that you are as calm as possible. Expect accidents and be very loving. If you are showing or feeling very scared, unsure your fur-baby will also and will also be very confused. Hang in there and please let us all know when you are safely back. |
God bless you and everyone in the path of this storm. Stay safe. |
I just want to say stay safe! |

I hope your trip goes safely and the hurricane loses strength before it hits land. Hope you can turn your evacuation into a mini vacation and enjoy yourself with your mom and the dogs! Be safe! |
