Should I get another Yorkie? I have a 3 year old precious little boy named Brownee. He has been diagnosed with possible GME. I spoke with the breeder I got him from and she said she would be happy to give me another puppy for free out of her next litter. She is going to breed again in November. This is the problem I run into. Should I get the puppy so Brownee can have a brother? I can see that being a good thing for him to have a playmate on the other hand should I just focus all my attention on him while he is going through his treatment? (Could last over a year). What do you guys think? |
The answer would be only in your heart. ;) I'm sorry your little boy has to go thru. so much, but hopefully he will come out of it just fine. |
I think the last poster was right, but I also might add if your Yorkie has a problem that could in any way be genetic could it be possible that you would be in for more heartache and cost? Puppys kisses from Callie and Toto! |
Oh the new pup would be from different dogs than before. I was just looking for people's experience with 2 yorkies instead of just 1. :) |
We were in the same predicament awhile ago...Miko has a compromised liver and has a history of HE (causing neurological symptoms), so we weren't sure if we should get him a playmate. On one hand, we thought it would be good for him and maybe the other pup would keep him cheerful, especially since he is best friend's with my mom's dog, and they loooove to play together...On the other hand, we didn't want to take any attention away from him or make him feel like he wasn't as important.... When he was almost 3, we decided to go ahead and get another furbaby, and we are happy with our decision. She keeps him on his toes! We got Emma right before Miko was going to have a surgery...When we brought him home from the vet hospital, she immediately gravitated to him and cuddled with him. She would lick his face gently and lay with him...We knew right away that we had made the right decision... |
Ahhh Honey ~ Follow Your Heart :) We know you love Brownee and that you are going to take good care of him thru his treatments. So you do what you feel is right.... |

I am sorry to hear that Brownie is sick. What is GME? I haven't heard of this before? |
What a sweet story YorkieLuv. Thanks for sharing that with me! GME stands for Granulomatous Meningioencephalitis. It is a uncurable brain disease. But he is starting treatment for that on Tuesday, so there is hope. I just wonder if it will help Brownee to have another yorkie around to cheer him up and such when I am not there ya know. I'm not trying at all to replace him or anything like that. I guess I have a few months to decide anyways. We will have to see how his treatment goes. |
I got 5 Yorkies :D The more the better... ;) And good luck for your little one. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
1 or 2 yorkies I just went through the 1 vs 2 dilema. There is a totally different dynamic with 2 vs 1. They will still crave and compete for your attention, but they can also entertain each other as the other posters' mention. I am so glad that we decided to get another friend for our 2 y.o. after our oldest passed away. We waited too long the first time. I think that if they are not from the same litter (and I understand that this is not the case for you, and the dame and sire are different), its best to get them close to the same age. I have not heard of this medical issue, and my thoughts are with you and your fur baby. I think its only when you have 2, that their full potential for play comes through. I had no idea they were so fast and maneuverable, until they started to whip around the house at top speed! Its a lot of fun to watch. Good luck with your choice. |
