She Just Wont Listen!!
 

ok so Canella is an inside dog that goes out all the time if im outside she is outside and i never put her on a leash because she usually stays right by me but lately she has been being soooo bad!...everytime she hears another dog bark she goes off barking like crazy!...and everytime a runner goes by or someone is walking their dog she goes crazy barking and runs after them!!! First of all i dont want her running after them because anytime someone can drive down the street and hit her (which almost happened last week i ran in front of the car any yelled at the guy at the top of my lungs stop!...but that is a totally different story) {worst night of my life} and second of all the only thing people wanna do is play with her and talk about how cute she is and its kinda hard to do that when she goes crazy barking!!!...please help any input is great....

Maybe it is time to start using a leash. I never trust my dog being outside without a leash. They can just run off when they see a squirrel or like you said, other dogs.

yea i guess i should start but everytime i put her on one she just sits all depressed (well it looks like she is)

I use a retractable leash. It goes out to 16ft . Suzi can still play and run all around safely. It is better ti keep them on a leash because these little guys are fast! :aimeeyork

You need to have her on a leash that is the only way to keep her safe. I have two that were trained to be taken off leash and they never run after anyone or anything and I still had an incident where Jewels just unexpectedly darted out in front of a car. Never take her out off leash. There have been people on here that thought they could do it also and their yorkie ended up getting hit by a car

I do know someone who successful trained their dog....not a yorkie...not to go past the perimeter of his property. It required walking the dog while leashed and correcting her every time she ventured past the imaginery line. I lived next door to him for 10 years...never once did she ever leave that yard.

So it can be done.....however, even the best trained dogs sometimes can't ignore the temptation of a passing dog, kid on a bike, etc. If you don't want her necessarily on a leash...I'd purchase a long lead. It would be so heartbreaking if a tragedy occurred that is so easily prevented.

yea thats what i have one of those little ones but when it retracts it yanks on her so she thinks she cant go anywhere

How old is she? The more you us the leash the more she will get used to it

Pixie is nearly 15 months old and has never been let off leash yet...until I trust her 110% she will not be..and if I did it would be in a safe 'enclosed' area with no large dogs around...I just won't take any risks whatsoever...she's my precious baby, she means everything to me..I would NEVER forgive myself if I lost her when it could have so easily been prevented.

This is true...all of mine are ecstatic when I start gathering their leashes.

I lost my little male yorkie this way in January and trust me, this is not something you want to happen to your baby girl :( It's heartbreaking. I'm still not over it and I don't think I ever will be. Seeing him laying there in the road like that is a site I can't get out of my brain.
It was completely my fault...you don't want to live with that kind of guilt.

Just last night, our 7 month old female yorkie was on the deck with my husband and myself. We were sitting so that we *thought* she was protected from running off the deck...WRONG!

She ran!!!! Down the steps and into the front yard straight for the road. I ran and yelled and hubby did too. When we finally caught her, I was crying and hubby was shaking all over. All we could do was hug each other and her.
This after we knew we should never let her out with being on a leash. I promise it is the last time ever! I always carry her to the backyard and put her in the fenced in area when I'm outside working. For some unknown reason, hubby wanted her on the deck with us. It was so scary, neither one of us could think straight after that.

So PLEASE for your sake and the sake of your fur baby, never let her off her leash. Use a harness to protect her throat. (in other words, don't attach her leash to a collar)
You can also use those cork screw stakes to put in your yard with long nylon leashes and that way she can play while you do yard work.

Terriers will bolt, no matter how well they are trained. If they see a bird, a rabbit, a person, whatever...they will run!
