Weight and Neutering Questions Tomorrow Jackson will be neutered. Unfortunately only one testicle is descended. The vet said that they have to look for the other one. He said if he doesn't find it right away he'll close him up and have to do the other one at a later date. Huh? Also, he is 6 mos. and weighs 5 lbs. He weighed 3.5 lbs. at 12 weeks. The vet says he should be up to 7 lbs. by 8 mos. But originally he told me they stop growing at 6 mos. Huh? |
Sounds like a second opinion might be in order...I've never heard of a dog being neutered twice so you might just want to consult someone else. I was told to neuter Archie between 6 and 9 months. He's 8 months old and due to go in for his test on Saturday and his neutering on Wednesday. But as for the testicle dropping bit--people have their dogs neutered at a really really young age, and the testicle presumably wouldn't have dropped at that time. If they can't find it, maybe he doesn't have it and then you wouldn't have to worry anyway. As for the weight, I really stopped trusting people who told me what weight Archie would be...he's like Chewbacca now. He's huge, and his sister is only 3lbs. Plus, vets can't predict weight without knowing the family. It's like your doctor telling you that you'll be 6' and 200 lbs. next year and your entire family for generations was under 5'6" and 150 lbs. How can someone say that unless they knew your family?! |
He could still grow some. Some stop at 6 months but some don't. My guess is he will probably still get to 6-7 pounds. Most get their height by 6 months and then fill out some. Both testicals should be removed at the same time. I would never allow 2 surgeries for neutering. I would also have the puppy teeth pulled at the same time. |
Second third and fourth opinions I called my old vet, where we used to live, and 3 more vets here and they all concur that a dog should not undergo 2 surgeries for a neutering and that they ALWAYS find the other testicle. Also this guy wants to do a sonogram, which is more $$$ and probably won't show anything. |
hannah i would go to another vet...... it sounds like they are after your money..... two surgeries means you also have to pay the money twice.... and a sonogram that he doesnt need??? that is deffinatly a red flag to a "money monger vetrinarian", any vet who suggests that he do two surgeries for a simple neuter would be crazy in my opinion..... my toby is getting neutered next month at a low cost clinic (i trust them completely they are GREAT :) ) and the only thing they do is charge an extra fee if they have to dig around for a testical that hasnt dropped....... *it is costing me $30 for teh neuter....i wouldnt expect it to be over 40 or 50 dollars if the other testicle hasnt been dropped yet* |
I was quoted $300 to $400 if it is simple! |
Have you thought about waiting a little longer and see if the other testicle will drop.. sometimes they do.. then it would be less expensive.. no sonogram needed for that. Just a thought. |
I'm paying 300, but that's because I have to pay for anesthetics, etc., and it's a private vet. And neutering IS simple, or atleast I would expect it would be for a good vet! They're supposed to know how to do this stuff, they should be doing it all the time! It's a little expensive in NY to neuter if you 1) have a dog, and 2) an income. ASPCA does it but for low income families. Some cities provide a subsidized neutering program, but here, it's only if you fall into low income that you can go there, or else, you gotta pay up. Otherwise, we'd all use the ASPCA and the government would have to subsidize a huge portion of their costs. |
i didnt have to prove any low income info for going to my vet  |
neutering Most Humane societies have spay/neuter programs. Many give a reduced fee no matter the income level. Costs depend on the area...in some parts of the US it only cost $35, others places are $650. I would find a vet who does the surgery in one procedure. At his age the testicule is no doubt a lost cause..sorry. Make sure he pulls any left over puppy teeth. His weight sounds right..double the 12 wk size. Neutering might add a pound or so, unless he exercises well..some get obese, others remain trim, just like humans. Best wishes |
