Chewing I have a 6 month old yorkie and she is full of energy. she is about 7 pounds and is just an amazing pet. The problem is she is starting to chew things and when I say things I mean the couch. She has chewed a hole in the couch about the size of the bottom of a liter pop bottle. She also has chewed the door molding. She is getting fixed next week, but still any suggestions? |
Unfortunately puppies chew. :( The best way to prevent damage is to never let them out of your sight. I know it can be a pain, but if they are out of their 'safe' area you really need to always have them in your sight. My DH has learned this the hard way with Gracie Ruth. However, it is me that has paid the price. He doesn't always watch her as closely as he should and she has chewed up one of my scrapbooks and one of my puzzle books.:eek: So although G did the chewing...DH got the "chewing out". :p They just can't help themselves. You can buy some spray to put on the things she's already decided she likes to chew on. Bitter Apple works well for me. But generally is will just make her look for something new to start chewing on. Truly the only way to prevent it is to totally keep your eye on her. Good luck!! |
Mine both chewed on anything they could find until I found bully sticks. When ever they started to chew I just showed them their bully sticks. So find something they really like. |
so just find like a treat or something she likes and give it to her if she starts to chew. she does most of her chewing when im at work. |

I tried many chew toys, and finally found Merrick Bully Sticks, and Joey just loves them. They really need to chew on something, teething hurts, and chewing helps toughen their gums. I think the easiest way to stop them from chewing on something you don't want them to chew on is to give them a great substitute. You can buy Bully Sticks online, and Joey eats about one 6-inch stick a week; they are very hard. I agree with Chachi, she should be kept in a place where she can't chew on things. Many people use x-pens, and some people put their kennel in a bathroom where their isn't anything to chew on. She shouldn't have run of the house at this age. Good luck on the neutering, are some of her baby teeth going to be removed at this time? |

kona has just discovered the wood trim molding in the bathroom...we are in the process of testing out the bitter apple, but i think i am going to just have to get an x-pen to be totally sure she wont chew up anything. if you're interested in one, im not sure of the price in the stores, but i saw a few on ebay for around $40...good luck with your little chewer :) exercise pen, Dog Supplies, Bird Supplies items on eBay.com |
I agree that Bully Sticks work wonders for puppy chewing problems. Wall-E will chew on a bully stick for hours. It certainly helps... also bitter spray on furniture will teach them not to chew on furniture. Just make sure that the bitter spray formula works on your type of furniture and doesn't ruin it. |
Chewing Chloe has lost most of her baby teeth already. Today was the hardest day ever leaving her in the bathroom when I left for work. Im going to look into the X-pen's and I dont know she is a strange dog and I think the bitter spray will just attract her. She just eats everything. Thanks again for the tips. |
