New to the Community... Hi my name is Shelby. I am new here. I do not own a Yorkshire Terrier but have friends interested in purchasing a puppy for their daughter. My reason for joining is to find out as much information on this breed as possible to ensure this is the right breed for them. I will be asking questions and I hope that you won't get tired of me. A little about myself. I own and show a four year old American Pit Bull Terrier. In the past four years I have learned a tremendous amount of information on this breed. The main thing that I focus on is health and genetics. Knowing that the breed has trouble with heart and hip issues (plus more) I will be here trying to gather as much info about Yorkie's hereditary health issues. Of course know breed is without some sort of genetic problems but I really don't want my friends purchasing something that will be in and out of the vet for one problem or another. Two breeds that comes to mind is English and French Bulldogs. With both a huge amount of research needs to be done to find a reputable breeder who's best interest is in health testing, etc. Anyway now I will move you over to the HEALTH forum so that I can start asking my questions! I hope that you will all welcome me even if I do get a bit annoying. Know that if I ask a stupid question I won't really know I did it because I don't know one thing about Yorkie's except their color pattern and that they have long hair. :) Thanks!!! Hope This helps  :animal36 :animal36 :dog: Welcome! If your friends don't what financial burden i think they might another breed. What do I mean by this? Well we all look at the fun side when thinking about purchasing a pet but there are down sides too. When I bought Ruby she was $1300 pushing and over my budget. Well never thought she would get sick. She did two weeks after coming home final costs of vet visits , she now is worth about $3000-$4000 . So keep this in mind. |
Welcome to YT. We'd be glad to answer your questions. We're such yorkie addicts. |
welcome Again..welcome.. |
Hello and Welcome!!! We used to raise PitBull Terriers... (for pets only). I love them to death..... They are the sweetest dogs! (besides Yorkies) |
Hi And Welcome To Yt :) |
Hi and Welcome to YT.. My name is Joy and I am owned by three little Furbabies.. Ellie Mae, Destiny and Sir Shiloh... Glad you found us... Feel free to ask as many questions as you would like.. :) |
Hi and welcome. Yorkies have pretty good descriptions, etc on YTCA.com. I have had very little health issues with my two, one is a tiny and one is 7 lbs. The only real problems I have had were because of Chloe's curiosity. She got open a "childproof" bottle of Advil and got a frog one day that made her sick. I'm very partial to this breed. IMO the only downside is the attention they require if you are unable to give it to them, so if your friends cannot provide a lot of attention, this might not be the breed for them. |
Well if I can find out enough info on this breed I may just be convinced that I need one too. LOL :) I do want a small breed but haven't quite pinpointed the breed I want yet. I considered Rat Terriers but have since changed my mind because most of the breeders that I have come in contact with don't believe that health testing is a necessity. They feel that if their little dogs can chase rodents their healthy enough... sorry I have learned that just isn't so with the breed i have. Anyway enough of that... onto what I was going to actually say. My friends daughter wants a puppy dearly. She wants one just like Paris Hilton... a purse dog. Whenever she is around a puppy the first question she asks is "Will it grow?" If the answer is yes, her answer is she doesn't want it. She wants a breed that will remain small so that she will have a forever buddy to carry around wherever she goes. I can see it too. She is great with puppies but all the pups she has or is around are growing to the point that she can't carry them anymore. Currently I am fostering three puppies (mix medium size breeds) and she has been wonderful for me because she helps "socialize" the pups for me. A friend of ours has a lab puppy who is growing, growing, growing and she so wants him to be the little guy he once was. She definitely has been taught well by her parents and peers on how to handle a puppy. We all feel that she is ready for her own. I just keep reminding mom and dad that this is a costly commitment with grooming every 4-6 weeks for the next oh... 15-20 years. LOL :) Mom has already said that when she goes off to college and/or moves out the dog is going with her. But by then... I am sure she wont mind if the dog stays around. Thanks for the advice here as well as on the Health board... keep it coming and I will keep the questions/concerns coming! :) Thanks! Shelby |
Yorkies are a great small breed. I am sure you would be happy with one. Good luck with your search. |
