Tail Docking Would like to know hear some opinions (a vet would be great!) on docking tails. Missy is just 13 weeks old, will not be spayed, nor bred, nor shown. I'm very paranoid of anesthesia having lost a Maltese while under. Have read a few posts about "laser docking." Any opinions on that? I do not want it done, as I'm can't imagine inflicting any pain on her for cosmetic reasons only. Unfortunately, her Daddy, being a former Yorkie Dad with a dock tail thinks she will look silly with a tail. All opinions much appreciated. |
Since your dog is already 13 weeks old, why put her thru all that, :confused:I believe it is very painful procedure if not done early. Since you don't plan on showing, it doesn't seem necessay, JMO. |
Given your dog's age and the fact that she will not be shown, I would not have the procedure done at this point if it were me. :) |
I myself do prefer Yorkies to have a docked tail, but it doesn't make them any less cute without it done either. It's just a breed standard which makes them more easily recognizable as being Yorkie. However, I also believe that it should be done only when they are very, very young... To do it now would only inflict pain on her for no reason. She will still be a stunningly cute Yorkie girl regardless - and to do this at this age would just be torture for her. It would be like circumsizing a boy at 13, compared to when he was a baby. Try this comparison on your boyfriend, and maybe he'll understand. |
Thank you both for your feedback. I hope I get many more answers like yours. Bottom line, she's definitely Daddy's little girl, so he will be able to be swayed with the right information. Thanks again! |
1 Attachment(s) I would personally never dock a tail for a dog that was not going to be shown if it was not docked at birth. I personally LOVE those flags just a waggin away! I could not imagine our Kiki without her!!! :) |
Deegan's Mom - Just shows great minds think alike. I already gave Greg this comparison, but coming from someone "not so close to home" really made the point. I think Missy will be wagging her long, cute little tail for many years to come! Nancy (message below from Greg) from her "Boyfriend" So how old was your dog when it had it's tail cut? Missy is only thirteen weeks old, not thirteen years! |
Most yorkies tails are docked at about 4 days, old, you don't really want to wait longer than this. I have read one thread on the laser procedure that was done on a European dog that wanted to enter the U.S. show, it was done one day and the next day she was in the ring. Normally when it's done after a few days, it's considered an amputation, and requires lots of healing time, but the new laser procedure sounds promising. I agree with the others, there is no reason for this to be done since you won't be showing. |
