Nervous new owner !!
 
Hi everyone my name is Olga and Im a new Yorkie owner!! and so glad to join the site. :D

We got Lily 2 days ago (Aug. 22), she is 7 weeks old, and very cute and playful. I just have a few questions...since im a new owner i'm a little nervous about EVERYTHING! :p .

The breeder was feeding the puppies with Eukanuba small breed puppy food. They added a bit of warm water to it so it turned into mush..so its easier on the puppies. When we brought her home we got her Eukanuba thinking that since thats what she was used to eating. I was just wondering what is the best and healthiest puppy food we can give her...and also she's been eating very little...a couple of little kibbles every few hours....is this normal??? should we get her a different type of food that she would enjoy more and eat healthy..

Welcome and congratulations!! 7 weeks is still very young and she may need to be watched closely to make sure she is eating enough. I would keep feeding her what the breeder was but you may want to slowly switch her to a premium dog food. I'm not sure what is available in Canada but here Wellness, Canadae, Innova are a few of the good foods. You want to really switch her slowly since the new food can upset theit tummies until they get use to it. You also want to have a supplement called Nutrical in case she isn't eating well it will help keep her sugar level up. Also be sure you know the signs and causes of hypoglycemia. In small younbg puppies it can be fatal of not caught immediately. Just ask any questions you have and we will be happy to answer them

I just brought my Suri home. I would definetly get nutrical if you haven't yet. It helps with the transition, and is good to have on hand incase her blood sugar drops. Good luck with your new addition.

i just recently switched my puppy to wellness a week ago...she really likes it and i bought a small bag for my brother's lab to try and he loves it too :)

so i think it must be pretty tasty... although i can't say from my experience :p but the dogs love it :D

Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new furbaby!!!!

Because you've only had your new pup for a day or two I would keep her on the same food until she has completely adjusted to her new home with you. That way if anything changes with her eating habits or digestive system you can rule out a change of food. After she is adjusted, this link has great info on dog foods that are excellent choices for your new baby.

Whoa....let me get this straight....is the dog food the ONLY food the breeder said to feed the doggie? Geeh, I always had menus and I had to fix 3 meals a day for my babies...she was 7 weeks also when we brought her home...
Cheyenne's breakfast: 1/4 cup Quaker Instant Grits with Bacon, a little bit of margarine

For lunch she had Canned Gourmet Chicken Mighty Dog with something mixed in it. (seems like it was rice)

For dinner I had to fix cottage cheese with a little Grandma's brand molasses with a little Mighty Dog on the side.

I had to keep Pedialite on hand along with Nutrical and Karo Syrup in her distilled water...Bil-Jac puppy kibble at all times....
I am so GLAD I don't have to cook for her anymore..............

You do have a menu too?

Congrats on your new baby! You'll fall in love faster and harder than you think, despite all the questions and uncertainty at first.

I got Duke at around 7 weeks too, I added water to Bil Jac, the breeder was feeding him that, but the vet also suggested that I get him some wet food as well. I did both for a few weeks then he went back to Bil Jac for puppy ever since, he's 10months now.

I agree with the Nutrical suggestion, great for them and as a training tool too.

Keep checking this site as you'll find great advice on here in your time of frustration and share your joy here too.

You can go to the food sections in here and ck on that but you will also find all kind of differents opinions so good luck with that;) I don't think Eukanuba is that great either jmho:animal-pa

Welcome to YT and congrats on your new addition.

7 weeks is VERY young for a Yorkie pup to be placed in it's new home. :( (Most reputable breeders agree that 12 weeks is the ideal age for placement.) Make sure that you are watching for signs of hypoglaucemia--the adjustment of her new home *may* stress her out and at such a small, young age, it it definately something to watch for.

I would recommend you continue her on the food she is accustomed to eating until she has adjusted to her new home. Then gradually swap her over to something else. In the meantime, research and determine which food you want to try to swap her over to. If you check the 'Health & Diet' section, there is a sticky with some of the more recommended brands of food (YT recommended anyway) and some of the companies will send you samples to try.

solid gold has good puppy food rated high, you can look up dog food analysis for information, bil jac has some nasty preservatives bha and bht, personally I would stay away from that. Innova, canidaie, solid gold, wellness and merrick are all good foods.

welcome to YT...glad you found us...i advice you to keep her on the same food then slowly switch to something else...but being that she is 7 weeks i would watch her carefully...and probably wouldn't start switching her over until she is about 12 weeks...don't want to cause unneccessary stress!
