Question re after spay
 
Roxie was spayed Wednesday and keeps trying to bite at the stitches, I just flipped her over and looked and right below her incision but before her privates. it looks swollen. Does anyone know if this is normal after a spay. I looked at my other 2 dogs and they don't look like that at all. My dd has my camera so I can't take a picture. Thanks

swelling is normal after any surgery. Its probably because she keeps trying to get at her stitches. She needs to be kept away from them. use an e-collar until the stitches dissolve or are taken out. you can ice her incision and the surrounding area if you like to help with the swelling.

Thanks! I have a onsie on her and that has stopped her but I take it off when I can watch her and she immediatley goes to the stitches. The incision looks great and no redness or swelling, just that area below that really looks puffy. I will try the ice. I just worry about everything.

you can also try putting ben gay or vicks vapor rub around the incision, not directly on it. This smells and tastes bad so it should deter her.

Cassi was recently spayed about a month ago. I had to keep her in onesies at all time. One night when I went to bed, I woke up for some reason and went to check on her. Thank god I did b/c somehow she managed to take off her onesies and started to lick/bite the stitches. I was extremely worried about it b/c it was all red and puffy looking. In any case, I started to clean her stitches twice a day with rubbing alcohol pads and I think that kept the infection away. In any case, I learned my lesson and started to sew the onesies one her (mostly around the shoulder area) so that she couldn't take it off. Also right where the snaps are, I ended up cutting a hole around the area so that she can go potty with the onesies on.

I tool Roxie in this morning as it looked a little worse. The vet gave her something to get rid of the inflammation. She said the swelling was causing her discomfort and pulling on the sutures. So glad I took her in. I think she s better already as I have to keep stopping her and Pixie from rough housing!

Sorry to hear that Roxie's swelling did not go down. I'm glad the vet gave her some medicine to decrease the swelling. I wish her a quick recovery.

I was going to suggest a onsie. If it gets red, I would definitely call the vet.
