Biting Yorkie. Pls Help My baby is 4 months now but I don't know what's wrong with her but she kept on biting us. We always ended up with bite wound. We give her rawhide, nylabone, toys and we even bought the bitter apple spray but it didnt seem to work. Do you think she will outgrow this? |
No this behavior needs to be discouraged. Otherwise these babies don't know any better. They don't know it's wrong. I would put bitter apple on Coco's tongue, every time she bit me. It only took 2 drops total for her to stop. If bitter apple doesn't work, try time outs. |
I know to some this may sound harsh but i've seen it work. My daughter had a boy yorkie who would bite and actually draw blood...she tried everything to stop this behavior and then she sent him to me. The first night here my husband went to put him in his kennel at bedtime and before he could get his hand out the dog bit him and left 4 good, sharp, puppy teeth bites that bled like crazy. This puppy was also four months old. We decided the next day that it was tough love time. What we started doing was every time he went to bite (which was often) we would just give a little shake of the scruff on the back of his neck with a firm NO! Within two days he was a different dog and he was able to go back home with my daughter and it was never a problem again. He is now six months old. Hope this helps. |
Water Mist If you will get a spray bottle and fill with tap water and spray LIGHTLY in the face they will stop. |

My Babe at that aged nibbled too hard on our fingers as well. It's upsetting and it hurts, but i think it must be natural for them. You need to teach your baby that it is not nice. I used the bitter apple spray as well and it really worked. We sprayed a little in his mouth the first time and it worked. I absolutely hated to do it but i couldn't let him continue that behavior on us. He is 10 months old now and i haven't used that on him in about 6 months and to this day if he even see that bottle he will freak out and start barking at it. I hope you can figure out what you need to do.... Just be patient and hopefully your baby will grow out of this!!!! :) |
Molly, all I can say is GOOD LUCK!..... Chelsea is 9 months old, and still bites, but slowly, getting better. I know she is playing, but sometimes she forgets her bite strength. I keep saying, CHELSEA, NO BITE, I dont know if she understands, but she does sometimes stop and looks at me. The innocent look...BITE?...whats a BITE???? I have tried the Bitter apple spray on my arms and hands, but it hardly discourages her, I WILL try the spray in her mouth, see if that teaches her some manners. In fact, I will try anything! Ahia was pretty bad about that for a while. a good firm no each time she did it. i was very firm with her. (not mean, firm). she doesn't bit any more. |
Just to clarify my post a bit. This little guy wasn't playing or nibbling. He was out for blood and got it...lol. Its really not funny. This little guy was viscious. Bitter apple didn't work and spraying water in his face just seemed to piss him off more. My three little Yorkies were all so sweet and my husband and I were just "shocked" by this little guys behavior. Not to mention my daughter was at her wits end. Thats why we decided to act more like his mom and grab him by the nape of the neck. It truely did work. PS Chelsea's Mom......I never noticed they were holding paws untill you pointed it out...lol...and I'm honored my pups are on your desktop. |
This is Ryby's favorite way to play. Yes i have ended with teeth cuts and so forth but I don't scold her they are terrier and this is there way of playing i believe that this can be corrected no doubt but I won't blame her for something she has no clue about. She is just trying to play and this is her way. She does like tummy rubs every now and then but bitting is her favorite she knows not to go to the extreme. Thats just her. :) :animal36 |

I read somewhere that you should yelp like another puppy would. It lets them know that what they did hurt, and to be more careful. If they continue to do it, then use social isolation. Don't look at him, don't talk to him or ANYTHING. Not even negative attention, because that's still attention. It has worked so well with Oliver! Brooke |
