Stitches haven't dissolved-what to do? Atticus was neutered 15 days ago, and he's all healed up. His stitches, however are have not all dissolved. Is there something I should/could do? When we picked him up, his vet said that we could bring him back if they did not dissolve on their own. I'd hate to take him in if I don't have to. Appreciate suggestions. :aimeeyork |
You could take them out yourself, if he'll let you. But they need to come out if they aren't disolving. |

Like Kalina said, it takes a few weeks to desolve. Having them in there isn't going to hurt him anyway. :p |

No good vet would charge to remove them, but it may be just the inconvenience of getting him there that's holding you back. If they are disolvable, I'm pretty sure they'll eventually disolve. Give him a bath! :D |
I personally see no reason to take them out, if he's in the water more they will dissolve faster, or if he licks himself a lot, why do you want to remove them? Are their prickly parts to them? |
Tali's sutures took forever to dissolve I agree with Nancy that there's no compelling reason for you to remove them unless they seem to be causing a problem. If you wanted to take him back to the vet to have him remove them, it's unlikely that they'll charge you. When a vet does surgery, the price of any necessary followups is usually included in what you pay at the beginning. |
It took 10 weeks for my Nikk's (staff) stitches to dissolve afrter she had a lump removed. My vet said to leave them alone, thet would dissolve and they did! |

The incision is completely healed so no need to fear infection. I have given him a bath twice. They are a little prickly. Giving it more time sounds like sound advice. If they don't dissolve and I'm too afraid to try to pull them out myself then we'll head back to the vet. Thanks all. |
I wouldn't be too upset if they haven't come out yet. Sometimes they do take a while to disolve. I understand your hesitation in removing them. When a surgery is done suture removal is usually considered part of the package. If the vet has to take them out it should be f.o.c. (free of charge) |
