Boating with Puppy? Does anyone take their puppy out on the boat? We are out on the boat about 5 days a week. I'd love to take him with us, just not sure what we'd do if he has to potty. Are Yorkies or Morkies good swimmers? I've seen little life vests but none small enough for him. |
We have a sail boat and have taken ours out in years past. We didnt put our boat out this year. You will definitely need a life vest. It is very hard to find one for a small pup most are made for adult dogs. Our marina has a grassy area and thats where we would take ours to potty. They love going out to the lake and are very wellbehaved there |
We used to take Max,but after a bad weather going to Bimini, he is not so fun to the boat anymore. He can swim, but keep in mind their legs are short, so they get tired very easy, never go into the water without a life jacket, we got ours at West Marine and was not hard to find. Sunscreen on his head, life jacket and your baby will do fine. |
He never peed or pooed in the boat, we take the dingy out and then he gets to walk and do his stuff. |
Sunscreen? OK, for people? Or is there one for dogs? I saw someone with a ball cap on their poodle recently, it was very cute! So, do you take the dingy somewhere or let him potty in the dingy? I'm assuming dingy is small boat? Our boat is 21 feet, we have a bathroom on it (for people) ;) but it is carpeted and I don't want to have to clean up doggie pee and poop. |
being that your baby is still a puppy i would worry if the heat is too hot..there was a thread recently about some taking their baby out on the boat and their had a heat stroke and almost died if it wasn't for the kind ems guy that actually help them although it was not his norm...be extra careful...yorkie do not do well in extreme heat or cold... |
I did think about that. We have a bimini cover so there is always shade and we could run him home to the AC if it gets to hot as long as we are on our lake, or dip him in the water. Actually I don't like having my kids out in the heat for too long either so hopefully we will never run into a problem. With the black hair he has now though I know he gets hot easily and seeks out the shade when in the backyard within a couple minutes. Thanks for your valid point! |

Thanks, I'd love to read it. Especially if they were putting pup in water and keeping him in the shade. Now then I would worry more! |
1 Attachment(s) Tucker loved his first time on a boat this summer! He didn't like when we went fast, though. And we only went a short distance to the beach. I would definitely recommend a life jacket for your little one if you're going to take him out a lot. I wasn't sure if Tucker would like the boat so I didn't want to invest in one, I just held his leash tight. |
Mine are less than 3.5 lbs each and have life jackets. I got them at the Bass Pro Shop - Extra SMALL! (up to 6 lbs) - they have velcro to help the fit. See my album for pictures! Next think you know they will be skiing! haahaa!!! Mine love the tubes and the wave runners! |

I did look into the life jackets but didn't find any here locally that fit. Maybe I'll need to look for one online. Thanks! |
Ivy loves the boat:) Yes you will need a jacket, petsmart have them, also you can go on line to "Paws Aboard" I got Ivys from them, cute too. You just need to be able to go shore for potty breaks. |
4 Attachment(s) Layla LOVES boating (and by loves- i mean she sleeps through the whole thing :p ) She has a life jacket that she wears when we are moving- it also helps keep her cool- her black fur attracts the sun like crazy! she LOVES to swim when we anchor and we take her to the beach to do her business. |

About the sunscreen, I use regular one for people, I don't know if there's one for pets, I use it on top of his head, where you can see the scalp. |
We just bought lifejackets for both of ours from Petco. Doodlebug is about 4lbs. and I got him XS but they also had XXS too. They are adjustable so I would think that either the XS or XXS would work for Jax. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...water-dog.html Here is a link to my post about our 9 day trip with Hot Rod. He did wonderfully! We kept him on the pad because we knew we'd be boating with him so he goes both on shore and the pad. We anchor out quite a bit so we wanted to make sure that he could go when he needed to. We got our life vests at Petco. Sizes xxs and tiny. Hot Rod loves the water and will even jump in himself off of the raft we have for him (while we are with him in the water). We also put him in the water without his jacket to make sure that he knew what to do if he should ever fall in without his jacket on. Our little girl had her first weekend on the boat the very first weekend we got her. We were in a marina so we knew she would be okay. Good luck and feel free to ask me anything about our adventures on the boat with them. |
I would definitely recommend wetting your baby down quite a bit if it is hot. I also have a cool pad for him to lay on. You could also use a cool wet towel for that. We either dunk him in the water or I wet him down in the sink. But be sure to watch for signs of getting too warm, it can happen very quickly. I take my snoozer car seat on the boat so he is able to look out when we are underway to combat sea sickness. Fortunately he has not had any issues with that. Maggie did get sea sick on our return trip home-it was a little rough. The 2nd weekend out with her she was much better. |
Helpppppppppppp! I have a 2lb. Yorkie. We go out on the boat every week. I really don't want to leave her alone at my house for 9 hours by herself since she is only 8 weeks old. I have no one to watch her. Do you think it would be a bad choice to take her out with us? We do have a shaded area for her to be... but no ac. Any suggestions? :aimeeyork Daisy! |
I use sunscreen made for humans of both of my dogs. I just try and find one that is made for sensitive skin or kids. I have found it to work well. I even put it on them if they are just out playing in the yard on a sunny day. |
Also have lots of water for her. I take my 3 on the boat everytime we go out and we also don't have ac but we too have shade. We go from early am till dusk. But at first I would do a small trip to see how it goes. Now every time they see their life vests they go crazy..love the boat!! |
