Daily Brushing Hello everyone! Just a quick questions today. I have been brushing my Molly (15 weeks, about 3lbs) every day using a slicker brush and she HATES IT!! [This is the brush that the breeder we bought her from suggested.] Every time she hears me get the brush out, she hides and will fight and cry when I try to brush her. I have tried letting her lick some nutracal while i brush her, i have tried treats, i have tried brushing her after she is all worn out from playing, but she still fights it. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to make her accept the daily brushes more? Also, do you think I should try a different brush? I am not brushing her hard but the slicker brush doesn't look all the comfortable to me. Thanks very much for your help in advance! Have a great day!:):) |
have you tried a babys toothbrush? That may be softer, but I know what you mean. Mine fight it too, so bad where now I'm just using Cool & Clear Dental. You just put it in their water. I found that using brushes cause static so I switched to a metal comb. It has a thick rubber handle and heavy metal teeth with rounded edges as not to hurt the dog. No static and goes right through the long hair. |

I use the pin brushes for small dogs or puppys.. In the beginning he didnt know what to think about it.. but now when i get the brush, i brush him almost everyday.. he falls a sleep while im brushing him. he likes it very much .. :) Good luck.. Priscilla and Mr. Snickers ! |
Before I got Roxy, I read everything I could get my hands on that told how to care for a yorkie. Then I went out and bought at least one of everything that was ever suggested. What ended up working best for us was a pin brush (I couldn't fine one without the little balls on the end), and a flea comb. I read to use the flea comb for the small facial areas, but have ended up using it for all of her. We brush first, then run the flea comb through her, and she seems to really enjoy both steps. The flea comb keeps any nasty tangles from ever setting in. I usually brush/comb her twice a day, but it only takes a couple of minutes each time. Hang in there - Roxy didn't enjoy it at first either, but once we figured out a QUICK and effective routine, it became a very enjoyable time for both of us! |

I use the slicker/pin brush with no balls on the ends too. I also use the comb. I brush him and then go thru him with the comb to make sure I didn't miss any knots. He didn't love it at first, but now is used to it. I use a spray in detangler/conditioner if he has a lot of knots. Which he doesn't usually cause I brush him everyday. I just tell him good boy while I brush him and he seems to enjoy it now. When he is all done, I tell him how handsome he is and he prances around loving it. |
My Katy is 16 weeks old and we had the same problem. She HATES the slicker brush. I think her skin is too tender and it hurts her. (She seems to have thin, fine hair). So we switched to a pin brush and then combed her after that and she is doing much better. Except for the beard/face area. I am working on that. She is getting her first official grooming this Saturday so I am hoping my groomer can give me some advice. |
When Bernie was little I tried using a slicker brush and he hated it too. Now, that I'm using a pin brush he loves to be brushed. He just lays there, hold his paws up, rolls over, whatever. Good luck. |
A slicker brush should never be used for brushing as it can scratch the skin or stick like a needle. It's only used to get out stubborn knots. For puppies and dogs with thin hair you could use a bristle brush and for dogs with thicker coats you can use a pen brush. |
Mica loves a pin brush as well. Our breeder said not to use a slicker brush or a wire brush with the little balls on the ends as it tends to pull out the new growth hairs that are just starting to come in and this can be hard on the coat. :animal36 |
Brooke has a soft boar's bristle brush that she loves!! It is more for finishing and smoothing but I use a pin brush first and finish with the bristle brush and she thinks she is getting a massage!! Good Luck!! |
You aren't the only one!!!!...I read the whole post thinking tooth brushing and even read your post not thinking anything and was really thrown off by the poster after you!! I had to go back and re-read to know what was being talked about! hahaha but seriously, do the water drops you're talking about really work? Would it be okay for a dog and a cat? all of grooming an issue Lily is 4 1/2 months and I have tried every brush and comb imaginable. She has finally settled some when I brush her back, but legs and face are still an issue. As for nail clipping - wow, she screams when you snip 1/8th of an inch and I am no where near the quick. The groomer told me she was the worst puppy they every had at Petsmart! She has just gotten over pneumonia (antibiotics, robitussin, vaporizer, showers, chest clapping, IV's twice) but still has blocked tear ducts. Holding her for eye drops is a scrambling, nail digging, tantrum. My arms are all scratched from her panic. I am gentle, firm and calm but really she is over the top. I'm open for ideas too - love my darling, but wow.:confused:. |
I would definitely buy a Chris Christensen brush- I bought one for Keoki and it does not prick his skin- it is a little pricey but worth it- Keoki now licks me when I brush him and he has ALOT of hair!!!! Good luck!!!!! |
Chris Christensen Dog Brushes Check out this site for those brushes. They are very pricy. I never try it. Let me just tell you what I do with my little trixie. I use the same type of brush that i use on my daughter, and it's working better than the one I bought from the pet store. I use the avon detangler, comb, and the avon detangler brush for long curly hair. My daughter has very long curly hair, and it used to get horrible mats in the back, I had to cut her hair several times, because of that. Well one day while brushing trixie, I got very frustrated because the mats on her hair were hurting her, and the brush and comb from petco, didn't work.I try my daughter's and since then, that is what I have being using. (I bought my daughter new ones) Remember, never brush them while dry. By the way, trixie loves to be brush now.:D |

So Ill go ahead and answer on the teeth brushing too lol I dont brush their teeth daily, Just ever once in awhile and both of mine have perfect white teeth at age 4 + I dont brush their Hair daily either, I use too, But dont any more, they never hardley get tangles. I think Minnies had 3 tangles and Mickey maybe one in all these years. I do bath them and use conditioner every week to two weeks. and we use a metal comb goes through their hair nicely. |
