When are they old enough to play with the "big" dogs? Rowdy's 14 weeks and we are starting puppy class on Sept.7th and I would like to get him socialized with some other puppies before then. My best friend has a rat terrier/pitt bull (Riley) that's 1 yr and a weimeranier (sp?)/who know what (Dixie Lee) that's 17 weeks. Her two play rough with each other, but would they be more gentle with Rowdy? They are both REALLY sweet dogs and Riley is much more like a rat terrier than a pit so the breed thing doesn't really bother me its just the size. He's not tinie tiny...we already 3 lbs, but I know they are still a lot bigger. Rowdy and Champ (my 8 year old yorkie) play great, but then again Champ's only 5 lbs. What are your opinions about letting yorkie babies play with bigger breed puppies? |
I have no problem with mine playing with bigger dogs, however, it takes a lot more watching to keep them safe. The age of the other dogs would be a bigger concern for me. I don't think they would know to play gentle with Rowdy. The 17 weeks absolutely not, the 1 yr old, perhaps, but that's still pretty young for him to be able to control himself. I doubt they'd try to hurt him on purpose and I'm sure Rowdy could stand his own ground, but for me it just wouldn't be worth the risk. They are big and tough in their own minds, but their bodies really are very fragile. |
Make sure you watch them around bigger dogs, some of the big dogs that Sam has been around I think they think he is a stuffed animal and they try to pick him up..Makes me alittle nervous. |
I say never, they can socialize on leashes. |
Tucker loves big dogs! Well, he thinks he is one, so... We started going to the dog park when he was about 4.5 months old and he loves it. He's always leader of the pack and we've never had a problem with big dogs (knock on wood). I am always very watchful and close to him when he is playing with larger dogs, though. Just keep an eye out and if anything makes you uncomfortable, that's it, Rowdy's done. I think it's important to trust your gut. |
If you notice my sig. I have 4 pits. My yorkies play with them everyday. I just keep a close eye on them and make sure nobody is being to rowdy. I havent had any problems. I know lots of ppl on here will say not to let bigger breeds play with the smaller dogs but you just have to use your own judgement. |
Mine are fully grown and I still won't let them run loose with a large dog. Even in play a large dog can do some major injuries to a little one simply by just stepping on them. I wouldn't do that to your baby. Keep him safe and out of harms way. |
