Newbie Questions :)I have the opportunity to purchase a male 1 1/2 year old unneutered Yorkie and I'm wondering if an unneutered male of that age may mark and if neutering would stop that if it's a problem. Are there any other questions I should be aware of to ask? Thanks, Potential Yorkie owner V NB Canada |
Since he's intact at over a year some behavior is going to be established. If he's been a house pet and is house broken then you can get him fixed and probably not have a lot of trouble. If he's been a kennel dog and not house trained...it can be done but it will require more patience. |
Neutering may stop the problem, but usually not in an adult dog once the behavior has been established. You may be able to retrain him, but it's best to ask yourself if you can live with marking when making your decision about adopting him. Belly bands are lifesavers for many people. |
Thanks! This is the reply I got to my question about marking, and some other comments -- how does this sound?: We haven't had any issues regarding marking in the house..mind you ,he is in his Kennel when we go out and we can't take him with us . When we are around the house he's with us..when we are outside we have to tie him now..as he's gotten under the horses feet and he had a run in with our Billy goat. He thinks he's "all that"..and much more..he lives with big dogs..so he thinks he's a big dog, he's not afraid of much. Our cats are bigger than Stanley. He's not "yappy"..the only time you will hear him is when you come home and he hasn't seen you for awhile. He will bark if someone comes to your door..however he does that here because his "big buddies" do it. Thanks, V |

More about Stanley This more quoted from the seller: Stanley is good with other dogs...we have Rottweilers,2 cats,5 goats and 1 horse... What size and breeds are the dogs and are they agressive? Stanley likes attention...we just don't have the time for him..and he deserves better than that. Stanley weighs maybe 6 pounds..he will not get bigger than that..he's small. V |

It sounds great to me but since I've never owned a Yorkie I thought I'd run it past Yorkie owners who could clue me in on what I may need to know to ask before purchasing. My name is Stanley..I am just 1 1/2 yrs old..I'm a really good guy...I need a "permanent","forever".. home where I can be an important member of a family or one persons best buddy..as I am going to live a long,long time. I am kennel trained and I do my dirt outside. I really like cats and other animals. I'm not keen on baths, However I will stand and let you wash and cut my hair if you really have too. You'll have to be patient with me at first 'cause I have to learn the rules of you house..I promise ..I'm real smart and I learn quick. It sounds like maybe you should go see him and make your decision that way. If he's been raised as an inside dog and doesn't have temperament or health issues he might be right for you. |

I'd definetly go see him before making a decision. Look at the house does it look clean. Check out the conditions of their other dogs too. Good luck. |
It sounds like they live on a farm since they have goats and horses. I bet he spends a lot of time outside and only marks there. Do you have a fenced backyard? It might be hard to make him an indoor dog, but if you have some property, it may work out fine. He sounds like doll. I'd definitely go visit if I were you. |
