Has anyone here had their beloved pet indiv. cremated? I've notice (after working for at different vet hospitals a good part of my life) that the individual cremations go with the "simple cremations" on the same truck... Perhaps that pretty little box is not the precious remains of your baby.... The truck will often take 10-20 frozen bodies at a time....I never asked, but I would imagine that a large bonfire takes place, depending on how many "pickups" there are on their rounds.. this is not to discredit the "disposal" company...they provide a service, but how do we "know" if our ashes we get back are "ours"..... I don't think they are regulated as a business :confused::confused:, but I'm not sure..... I bury my pets in the backyard, but I know some live in apartments and places where it is not allowed by law......:rbyorkie: roxanne |
OMG how terrible. We buried our rottie in the backyard when he passed. I wouldn't have it any other way. |
I prefer the individual cremation. I received the ashes in a little pine box with a lock and my pets name ingraved on it, but I have order a special customized urn for the ashes. |
We buried Skoshi in our backyard. |
I have my cat's, Einstein Friday Fitzgerald (a girl), ashes in a little box at home. I guess a part of me wondered if these were actually her ashes. All I could ever do is hope they were. |
My last yorkie-Bandit-was indiviudally cremated & my mom has his ashes in a beautiful little urn in her bedroom. |
I used to work in a vet clinic and saw several clients choose to have their beloved pets cremated. The remains were returned in a beautiful box and from what I saw, were always handled with the upmost respect. I think it is horrible to even suggest that you might not end up with your pets ashes. In a time of mourning, that should be the farthest thing from your mind. In my opinion, having your pet cremated is a wonderful tribute and should be thought of as no less. |
I had my sheltie, Mickey cremated when he passed and his ashes placed in a nice little urn. It never really crossed my mind that those ashes that I got back wouldn't be his, but I guess it could happen. After all, my when my boyfriends parents dog died, they wanted to have her cremated too, but after a week of not hearing back from the vets office to come and pick up the dogs ashes his mom called to inquire. Turns out there was a huge mistake - they didn't cremated the dog - just sent her to the doggy dump or did what they usually do with dogs that aren't being taken home to bury or have their ashes burned!!! My bf's mom was so distraught & with reason!! I couldn't imagine that happening to my pet! |
I left my little Heidi's body at the vets..It was the worst feeling..leaving her there..I wish now that I had asked for an individual cremation..It is my biggest regret..:( I was so distraught at the time I don't think I was thinking straight..I also live in military accomodation so a buriel in the garden was not an option unfortunately. I have some of her things and lots of photo's in frames around the house. |
I had my parakeet of 14 years individualy cremated. I didnt get much back so I would like to think its all him! |
My brother's dog died in January-we live in Ohio. The ground was too hard when they tried to bury him-he really tried too- just not strong enough I geuss. So- my Mom found a guy in the yellow pages- he's local. He picked up the dog and my Mom and brother followed in a car. They met at the guy's place of business- and when the business was "being done" they were at a local diner having coffee with the guy. After the coffee--they went back and they got the ashes to take home. Growing up we had 3 dogs and they all died in the warmer months. I had never thought of what to do in the winter. Some people leave their pet at the vet. What does the vet do? |
We buried Scooter in our backyard near another pet that died in 87. We live near a small mountain and the digging wasn't easy but I wouldn't have any other way. |

I had a stray dog from our neighborhood that was killed, cremated. There is a pet crematory in the next town. I was offered to have individual cremation versus cremating several dogs at a time. He said the difference is this: If several dogs are cremated together, they are put in individual 'holders', but placed in the furnace thing ( forgive me for not knowing the correct terms) at the same time. They are not all jumbled up together (at his place). Individually, of course, means your pet is the only one in the furnace. |
I think the one that ashes are paid for to be returned - are kept seperate! and handeled each by them selves- that is why it cost more! IMO! I have never had one cremated, but my sister has, and a very good friend. each with there name on it, ect! I think most companies would handle this with the respect it deserves- word would get out- one way or another- and would not be good for their company! |
I have thought about this for so long.....I still do NOT know what to do when that time comes!!!! We lost my DH's yellow lab a few years ago (his shop buddy) and we buried him here. BUT w/ Mojo and LilyGrace....I don't know if I want to bury them here, as we may not live here "forever". I have NEVER wanted to do cremation for anyone...but I am thinking this is the only way to keep them w/ me FOREVER! I would DEFINITELY do the individual cremation, as I want their ashes and no one elses...but then again...I wonder, how do you know you are getting them..... I always have toyed w/ the idea of sending their ashes to the place that turns them into a little gem that is made into a necklace, etc...but than again....I question if you really get "them"...is it really their ashes?! I worry too much, I know...but I always have that doubt...and I want to make sure! |
We have always buried our pets in the back yard except for one. Our beloved Maggie a cocker-chow mix. She was put to sleep in the vet's office when she was found to have advanced mouth cancer. We left her there. My mom and dad had their dalmation cremated and have the ashes. I would always be afraid I would lose them or spill them. |
Most individuals feel the cremated remains of a pet they love should be afforded a resting place that can be identified by the name and dates. This is memorialization. Families find that pet urns and memorials serve a basic human need to remember their beloved pets. For more info just visit to my site link:Shurden Jackson Funeral Home |
I have buried beloved pets in my back yard....whn I mentioned that to a friend of mine that deals in real estate, she told me it was ILLEGAL to be burying dead animals in your back yard....contamination or something....so I now have my beloved pets cremeated, and my really special pets have urns and a place on the mantel or my dresser....my other special babies I bury their ashes in elaborate ornamental pots that can be taken with me if I ever move again.......I think since all the dogs ran and played together, if I needed to, I could without causing me undo regret or stress, combine the ashes of the babies in one large special urn.....either leave them in the plastic bag they are enclosed it, or actuallt combine them all together.... I have had 4 pets cremated, and I attended the "funeral" of each, called a "witnessed cremation"......and left with the ashes of MY pet in an wooden urn. |
Our little minature schnauzer died on the operating room table 6 years ago. We had her individually cremated and her ashes are kept in a mahogony box in the bookcase. My husband and kids know when I die her box with her ashes is to be put in my casket and buried with me. I know this sounds morbid but it gives me peace to know she will be with me in some way. |

Not at all, I dont think it's morbid!!! Same thoughts here!!! These 4 followed me everwhere I went and slept with me from the time I got them...they will go with me when I go! |
I want to say there was a story about a crematorium lying about these things recently. In general, I think you just have to trust that your vet has chosen a trustworthy company. When my animals pass, they will be cremated and/or I will harvest their bones and keep the skeleton and/or I will keep certain parts depending on my feelings at the time. But then my undergrad degree will be in anatomy, so I'm....a unique individual. |
When my boys were little they grew up with their faithful companion Sasha. She was a chow mix and adored her. She had a tumor in a inoperable place on her head so we had no choice but put her to sleep. They had her for thirteen years. My oldest son stayed with her till her last breath when the procedure was done. He said it was the saddest thing he ever had to witness. I have two fur babies now, and when that time comes I will cremate them also. My son keeps sashas ashes in his bedroom. |
As a licensed funeral director and embalmer, I can tell you from experience that many people choose to have the cremated remains of their pet buried with them. In my own family, my husband will be cremated as well as our pets. The plan is to bury all of the cremains/ashes with me if I go last. Many pet crematory's offer different types of cremation. It is important to choose the individual cremation. It is also important to know who you are dealing with. Go visit the place of business and ask for a tour. Ask lots of questions! |
we had mollie my beloved labrador creamated and we had a individual cremation and we had her ashes in a urn returned to me and the same with male jrt// there ashes will be buried with me |
We have had all 3 or our little min. schnauzers cremated. The last just being about a month ago. If I thought I did not get an indivd. cremation like we paid for, I would be upset to the helt. I have all three of their little boxes in my computar room and its always made me feel close to them. I hope and pray thats what we got and they were treated with dignity. Its a horrible thing to have to have one that you love so dearly put down, let alone having to worry about something like that. I hope mine are always treated like I want them to be. We have 1 schnauzer and 3 little yorkies that will be cremated when their time comes. It would be unbearable to think of them being treated bad and their ashes mixed with other pets. |
