to register or not to register .. that is the question.... i know there was a thread about this but i just got into a convo yesterday with my puppy trainer and i need to get more feed back from you guys. ok i asked what is the importance of registering my dog and she told me that depending on the state you live in that if you dont have them registered you can be fined. IS THIS TRUE.... ???? |
Bump plz anyone??? |
Yes...I have to send in my paperwork to NYC to register Maximus...if you do it after neuter I thinks it's like 10-15 bucks cheaper. Maximus is also registered with AKC....btw..you can get the application at the vet for the NYC registration |
ok so u have to register them 2x... one with the state your in and one with a Yorkie association ? is that it??? where do u go register them in your state? NYC oh thanks for responding :) so far ur the only one :( |
I hadn't heard about registering with the state? We live in Florida, maybe it's not every state that requires this? |

http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vet/vetdog.shtml there is the link..and it's 3.00 off for neutering and the whole thing is less then $30.00 I think..I still have to fill mine out.. :) |
Hope this helps clarify. You must get a rabies shot and register your animal with whatever governing body that applies. For instance..I live in a county in MD and I have to register each dog each year for LICENSING purposes ony. That is a legal issue and if you don't license your animal there can be legal ramifications. Registering with, oh say, AKC, ConKC, ACA or APRI is simply a choice you can make to do or not to do. If you register your animal with AKC you can then request a pedigree and so on. THIS REGISTERING HAS NO LEGAL PURPOSE. So, there are huge differences in the purposes for registering. Does this help? I think your trainer was mistaken in her understanding or just didn't go into the issues enough. |
I have never heard of being fined if you don't register a purebred. Sounds crazy to me. You would need them if you are planning to show, breed, or just for the sake of having them. I'd check into that or ask again if that is what your trainer actually meant. Let us know, I am sitting here with a puzzled look on my face. I just can't imagine that being a law in any state. |
Rini and I were posting at the same time. Yes, we do HAVE to get a dog license here or you can be fined $300-$500 per day. Doesn't matter what kind of dog or cat it is, they all have to have a license. |
i think she was referring to the registration in the State but i was talking about registration w/ an association... just failure in specifics. Licensing?? can u explain further and u have to do this every year? is this done everywhere and if so where can i go to get info on registering my baby? thanks :) |
The court house for your county sells them. Yes, you have to do it every year unless you get your pet tatooed for life. It is cheaper if your animal is spayed or neutered. Here in PA it is $6.00 for a neutered/spayed dog and $8.00 if they are not. |

I live in Suffolk County and I am wondering if I have to get a Dog License for Roxy and TJ. I can't find anything the Suffolk County Website. Is anyone familar with Suffolk County, NY? Thanks |
NEVER MIND...I went to the Town of Brookhaven and I found what I was looking for! |
I live in Los Angeles and we are required to register our dogs with the City/County. If we are caught with them in public without registration we can be fined. Though I have registered Bella, I can't recall a situation where I was ever asked for the registration tags; however, there is another thread on YT that's currently hot where someone got a ticket because they didn't have their dog's registration tags on them. Bella's registration was only $10.00 (or around that ballpark), better safe then sorry I say. You should be able to get information on registration at your local animal shelter. Here are the links for CA's pet licensing information: http://animalcontrol.co.la.ca.us/html/Main1.htm http://www.ci.la.ca.us/ANI/doglicense.htm |
I think some may be confusing registration (i.e AKC), with licensing. LoveMyBaby, I've never heard of a state requiring that your dog be registered with an association like AKC--that's not even possible with a lot of purebred dogs because their parents aren't registered. Most municipalities require your dog to be licensed with them. In my city, it is $10 to license, but the fine for an unlicensed dog is only $10, and I've never heard of anyone in our town being fined for an unlicensed dog. Also in my town, if my dog is lost and it's wearing it license when it's found they won't use the license to track the dog to me, which I think is ridiculous. So.....I don't license my dogs because it's just a way for the city to make money, and it doesn't benefit my dogs or me in any way. I'm sure it's different with a lot of cities though Hope this helps. :) |
