When I'm teaching any skill, I reward in the beginning when they just start to make the right move. Gradually, I start insisting on the full move before I treat. I think that would be the same for potty training. Your 9-week-old obviously understands. He's just not there yet. Maybe move him to the center of the pad after he does it, then treat. Good luck |
Someone once told me that even when they miss but are very close to the peepad to reward and praise them cause then it will encourage them to aim for it again. It's when they are totally off that you ignore them and act like you never saw it, well atleast that's what i was told and did and it worked on London. |

Oscar had a few misses at the beginning too. Sometimes I would even move him to the middle of the pad while he was mid-stream. It didn't seem to bother him or interrupt the flow. He caught on pretty quickly. |
we rewarded Avie, when we were pee pad training her..(even if she would miss the pad) ;) she got the idea.. just missed the actual target! :p we are doing the same thing with Gemma, right now! if you catch them in the act(peeing NOT on or NEAR their pad.. pick them up and take them to the pad, tell them to go potty there!) ;) |
Awee, God bless his lil heart, he sure is tryin Momma! I'd definately give him praise, hey, at least the lil guy is tryin, that's hard work for such a young one to learn. How smart!! I wouldn't go over board with the treats though, he may expect it every single time and then end up over weight. I used to (well actually still do) praise like crazy and get all excited and tell Lil Miss Maggy May what a good girl she is when she goes on the puppy pad. She LOVES the praise and excitement of it all and she walks off so proud holding her head up so high just prancing like a lil deer. |
thanks everyone...i'll def. continue to praise and treat with nutrical, he loves that stuff! |
I would praise for the effort but have you thought about putting the pad in a box made for them (sold at pet stores)? Maybe it would be harder to miss? |
thanks. i'm going to try that pad holder!! |

 I use a doggie litter pan for Lexi. It has low sides, and one side is even lower. I just put the pee pad right in that, and Lexi hops in and goes in there. (I figured the pad would be neater than having to clean up the bedding that would get tracked around.) |
When pottying training my lil one I did give her praise and a treat even when she missed the pad.....she was halfway on with her front paws and in her mind she must have thought that she was all the way on. She always knew when she did wrong and pottied in a spot besides her potty pad. I have also heard that you can also use a washing machine drip pan and place their pad inside of it and that will help also as they need to go in the pan to do their business. |
