Coyotes!! Last night about 9:30 Pebbles almost went through the screen door after something or someone! She was going so crazy that my husband went out to check but didn't find anything. I'm not sure what the heck is going on around my house but for about the last week I've been hearing coyotes in the not so far off distance. They are calling back and forth to each other. We do NOT live in the country but a very heavily populated (60,000+ people) suburb of Chicago. We have lived in the same house for 17 years and when we first moved here it was mostly farm land but in the last 8 to 10 years most of that is now gone and the coyotes are still here. When we had our Lab the coyotes did not bother me as much as it does now. She scares me since she is fearless and wouldn't have enough sense to stay away from the danger! I'm just a little freaked out that what she was going crazy was possibly a coyote in our front yard! She had me up ALL NIGHT long whining and pacing around. We even put her into her crate and that didn't settle her down. I'm not looking for an answer since I know there isn't one except to keep her in the house. UGH I need a nap! |
I am sorry for your discovery Coyotes are everywhere. I live 2 minutes from Downtown and My Husband spotted one a mile from our House. Everyone really needs to be on the lookout for them |
I'm so sorry you were frightened. I've been there too. We had a mountain lion next to our front porch when we lived in Nor. CA The good news is that coyotes don't generally come too close, unless they are sick or in desperate need of food/water. Unfortunately, this is just another example of us humans invading their living spaces. Keep your chin up (and your doors closed). |
Yes, they are everywhere. People would be truly amazed if they know how much wildlife actually live 'in town' with them. We live in a suburb of Dallas, and besides the Coyotes we have Bobcats and Deer running around. Not to mention the snakes. :eek: Coyotes are VERY adaptable and have learned just how great it is to have a steady supply of food provided for them. Coyotes and Hawks...2 of my biggest fears with these little guys. Gracie Ruth is equally as fearless and would not think twice about challenging anything that invaded her realm. Silly little tiger princess. :rolleyes: |
Please be careful, since you say she is fearless. I read in the RIP section, that a coyot was in someone backyard and their fearless little guy wnet barking up and at it. I will not go into to details, as I stated I read this in the RIP section (sad) :( |
Funny I saw this post just as the SF CA news broadcast said there is a problem with coyotes trying to attach small pets in N. Ca. Be careful everyone!!!!!!!! |
Coyotes!!!! I can certainly understand your fear because I do live out in the country. I have four big farm dogs that start howling as soon as they hear the coyotes start to howl. We're on six acres and sometimes, it sounds like they're right out in the back. Having said that, it's kind of funny because when my big dogs start howling back at them, my little Bella starts too. She finally got somewhat of a howl down - I mean how much can a Yorkie howl????? It is just too funny! Of course, she's always snuggled right up in bed with me - except not since her babies have been born - but she sure keeps howling!!! |
Speaking of Bobcats~just this summer the police shot and killed a cougar inside the city of Chicago. Their had been spotting of a large cat for a few weeks and it was all over the news since they are not indigenous to Chicago IL!!!! They did testing and found out it migrated from Montana I think.:eek: I think they might be looking for food and that is why I have been hearing them recently. I was just talking to my neighbor and she said she saw one inside our neighborhood last week. She didn't realize they could jump a fence but I know they are totally capable of this without a problem. |
When I bought Maya, her breeder asked if we had hawks. I said no, but I saw some in Collierville. How far from you is that she asked. exactly 3 miles. Well she said, then they are in your area, she can never go out alone. |
OH heck and I forgot, there was a coyote sitting on my neighbor's doorstep who refused to move, so I guess we have them too. |

We had one fly into our tree about 2 weeks ago. I grabbed Doodlebug and Pebbles immediatly and headed indoor. Afterward I heard from another neighbor (yep I'm friendly) that they where in their pool and it swooped down at their heads while they were swimming. Be very careful with little dogs around coyotes. I had a little Jack Russell snatched a few years ago by a pack of coyotes. They will lure the dogs out of their protection and then grab them. |
YIKES! That is scary. I know that coyotes live up on the mountain behind our house, I've heard them before and seen them at the creek to the entrace of our neighborhood. That (plus a ton of other reasons) is why I always go outside to check everything before taking out mine. |
We live in the country and not only have to worry about coyotes, but coydogs. Mine are never let out alone. |
