Introduction Hi all! I'm new to YT (and Yorkie ownership) and just wanted to introduce myself. I am a college student in Southern Oregon (formerly Seattle), and my new family addition is an 11 week old male Yorkie named Winston. Before he joined us I was a "strictly cat" person, but he has brought so much joy and laughter into my life (and I've only had him a week)! My three cats aren't very happy about him yet...they are used to having mom all to themselves... but they are getting used to it. The week has not been uneventful, however. The day after I got him, he went into hypoglycemic shock and had to be rushed to the vet. We bonded well over the next 24 hours because I had to stay up with him and force feed him every hour. I was so glad to see posts from other owners with similar experiences (not that they were good experiences) because I thought I had done something to hurt Winston! I had no idea that Yorkies were prone to hypoglycemia and I wish the breeder would have warned me! The vet explained that he must have had a tough time adjusting to the new house and cats, and he has been perfect ever since. Anyway, looking forward to sharing more ideas, experiences, and advice with you all! ~Heather |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Sorry to hear about Winston's hypoglycemia problem, but thank God you got him to a vet when you did. You have to be so careful when they are small. I love the name too! Sue |
Post some pictures when you get time. We all would love to see him. Sue |
Hi Heather and welcome to YorkieTalk. I love the name Winston! I think he's the first one here. I have Bo, who is 9 months old and Woody who is an 8 year old Schnauzer. Bless your heart, how scary to have a hypoglycemia episode. You're right, the breeder should have warned you about that. I think some breeders even send home a tube of Nutrical with a new puppy. Thank heavens he's OK. You will love this forum! But be careful, it's so addictive that it may interfere with your studies, lol! What are you majoring in? We have several college students here. Here's a thread someone started regarding everyone's fall semester: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...hlight=college I'm waaaayyy past college age, lol, but my daughter will be a freshman and will be moving to her dorm on Aug. 25. I am sooo sad, but also excited for her. Anyway, enjoy, and welcome to YT!! |
Welcome to the group. Everyone here is great. The name Winston is great, so manly and proper. Look forward to seeing pics of your lil guy. DaniBelle & Skittles |
Welcome and love his name. Can't wait to see some pics. Hope you have many more uneventful weeks with just fun & no vet trips with your Winston. :D |
Hi Heather and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Sorry to hear about your baby's hypoglycemia problem but you did the right thing and I'm glad everything is okay now. I have to agree with everyone else and tell you that I love his name. Very manly. Hehe. How much does he weigh now and do you have any pictures? I'm sorry to hear that the breeder you got him from wasn't very reputable and didn't warn you about hypoglycemia, which can happen to any little dog. At least he's with you now, where he'll get all the proper care and attention he needs. I'm 19, btw, married and I own a Yorkie and a bigger dog. I'm not in college but if you ever need advice from someone your age, don't hesitate to PM or e-mail me! Good luck and enjoy your new baby! |
I LOVE that you said "someone your own age"....it's like getting carded to buy a beer! Thank you, you are my new favorite person! ;) Actually, I am 30, on my second time around in college. I will be finished with my Bachelors in Sociology next spring and then I move on to earning my Masters in Library Science, (yep, I want to be a librarian....boring, huh?) I don't have any pics of my baby yet, but I will post some as soon as I can borrow a camera. :) His "hypo" issue was last Monday, and when I took him back to the vet last Wednesday he weighed 1 pound. I can tell he has gained in the last week, though...his harness gets adjusted daily. :) Thanks for all the replies....you guys are making me feel right at home! ~H |
