My Starsky is a teapot and he is more to love!! He weighs around 12 to 13 lbs. I haven't weighed him in awhile. He has more than double the size of his mom and dad and brothers and sisters. I heard it comes from the grandparents. He is just a bigger,cuter yorkie!

I always think of them both as just a "slang" reference to the size range!
I have heard it was started being used by breeders
(Poodles???) in reference to a size range-but don't know if that is really true or nt!
It does not offend me for someone to say they have Tcups for sale or whatever.
But it does put up a red flag to me when they say they breed for TCups!
But all this is JIMO!!!!

I have a big boy- thought I would end up with a 5-7 lb boy- but I love his personality - and don't care what size he is!! That Teapot is staying with me!! LOL!!

I actually think there is nothing wrong with using the word teacup. My breeder, who I adore, refers to the smaller ones as such. And the bigger ones she calls standard, which is true. I always wondered what word is acceptable to describe the wee ones? There is always going to be some breeders or petstores out there who misuse the word teacup. But in my opinion its not a bad word to refer to your wee one that way :)

Tiny, small or below standard size is probably correct terms but as long as there are dogs people are going to call the small ones teacups.
I guarantee you can tell someone there is no such thing as a teacup Yorkie and the very next breeder they call they will ask them if they have any teacup Yorkies. Maybe we should consider adopting the term and go with it?

i dont think they should adopt the term and go on with it. everyone knows the word and its going to be used yes.

But put plain and simple, someone started calling the smaller ones "teacups" and some breeders use it. but its such a looked down word because so many breeders ABUSE the word and abuse the fact that Yorkies can be smaller, therefore making them do dangerous things to achieve the "teacup" size just to make them a little more pocket happy, which then affects the puppies in the long run. Yes, some are healthy but it takes a lot to get that far, and there are lots of risks.

there isnt a guarantee that your "teacup" will actually be tiny. Its like people, some come out bigger than others and some come out smaller than others.

I mean, really, a tiny Yorkie is much harder and costly to raise so whats wrong with selling them for more if they are healthy? A large Yorkie could be weaned at 5 or 6 weeks but a tiny Yorkie may not be weaned until 10 to 12 weeks old. A lot more time, energy and money goes into raising a tiny puppy so isn't it justified to sell them for more money?


I do not agree with one thing you stated in this paragraph.
First of all even a german shepard puppy should not be taken from
it's mother at 5 or 6 weeks! All puppies should stay with their mother's
for at least 10 wks. Why, because they need to learn social skills and
where they belong in a pack. Only mommy can teach that.
Also you stated a Tiny Yorkie is much hardier and costly to raise.
This is true for only one reason. Because they are sickly for the most part.
It's cruel to breed tiny's delibertley. To bring something into the world
to suffer from illnesses is not a love for the breed but greed.
To raise a 4lb Yorkie or a 16lb Yorkie does not cost any difference in
yearly expenses if they are both healthy. They get the same shots, grooming,
food, toys etc. So where is it cheaper to raise a Teapot?
A Teapot (enderring term used on YT) is hardier in the long run.
A Yorkie is a Yorkie. You either love the breed for what it is or you just
love carring around a tiny to impress everyone. Some teapots turn out
to be that by nature. They could be the smallest in the litter but just continue to grow. There is no guarantee as to size ever unless you know
the lineage and then surprises happen.
Go back to your books and do more research because you didn't get it right
the first time around.
I have a Teapot and he is beautiful, healthy and perfect in every way.
I did pay more than $1,000.00 for him also and I have no regrets.
This post is not to be negative against your thread but to show you
your way of thinking is not reality.

Just wanted to add to what everyone said My teapot Was VERY tiny as a puppy i got him at 8 week's he was only 2 pounds & had low sugar problems he grew to 19 lbs..

I agree with you. I also just wanted to add, my teapot (keg, as we call him) is a lot more expensive to care for than my 5 and 4lb. Yorkies!! He is about 22lbs. right now and he goes through food like there is no tomorrow...my two little ones eat very little. We feed Canidae to them and buy it quite often because of Harley (our big guy). Is it like feeding a German Shepard, no way, but I just wanted to add that the original poster said that a small Yorkie is more costly to care for and I have to completely disagree...my two smaller ones combined are cheaper to care for than my one huge Yorkie.

Why does size always matter? I've seen so many tiny Yorkie's that don't even look like Yorkie's? When I was Breeding Artie & Abigail, I was flooded by phone calls asking for "Teacups", I never called them that but everyone else did and still do! It irritates me b/c I always explain to the General Public (any stranger that comes up to me) that there is no such thing?:confused:
It's usually people w/Yorkie's that use that term, that think they purchased a different/special kind of Yorkie? I try to explain that there is only one kind a Yorkshire Terrier! Teapots are a label that came about as a joke for over the weight Standard. When I'm out w/my 3 Yorkie's I always refer to them as Small, Medium & Large when people ask me how much they weigh?
