Ideas on slowing puppy down When he eats:confused: Axl came from a big litter of 5 and he inhales his food so fast at feeding time. He sometimes get's an upset tummy! I even tried giving him food separate from Jeter and Yumi Yasha so he wouldn't think they were out to steel his food, but he still ate at super fast speed! He has never gotten aggressive over the food, just has it eaten up in seconds from the time I set the darn bowl down. If it help any he is 11 weeks old, and each of my pup's have their own bowls and eating area. Thanks for any suggestions you might have. I think I have to find a way to slow this boy down! |
I'm not sure if this will help...maybe put down a quarter of what you feed him then wait a while, put down some more, and so on and so on until he's done. Sounds like a lot of work but it may help him not get an upset tummy. |
There's a special bowl that has kind of a dome shape in the middle so the dogs have to work to get the food. I'm not sure what it's called, but I'm sure someone will come along that knows soon. |
My Maltese is the same way. I use a treat capsule by Petstages or a Kong when I feed her. This helps to slow her down and she has to work a little to get her food. |
I feed my puppy all meals from a treat ball. I put the kibble in and she has to roll it around with her paw to make the nibble come out. Several companies make them. You could also put all kibble in separate kongs. Dogsin the wild spend most of their time foraging for food so it is a natural behavior. |
My friend's cat does this and she put a couple of golf balls in his bowl to slow him down since he has to eat around them! Good luck! |
Thank you all for your suggestions. I am a stay at home mom so I will have time to try these all out on him. Anything that will help this guy out! I can't recall the bowls name but I thought I read something about a special bowl to slow down eating so dogs don't get bloat. I think I might google it and see what I can come up with |

I wonder if Edgar's mouth is big enough to get a golf ball stuck in it. But it probably would work if they don't fit! |
update I just wanted to let you all know that I purchased a package of 6 golf balls at WalMart the week before thanksgiving for maybe $7. I put 3 in his little bowl and 3 in our lab's bowl. They don't slow her as much, but Edgar has definately been eating slower! He doesn't burp as much or chuck up unchewed food in high traffic areas. The first night I poured the food over the balls, but it works better if I take the balls out so I can see how much food he's getting, then put the balls on top. this was a great idea!! |
Biggie did this as a pup and would get sick. He would not touch his bowl with the golf balls so I started to hand feed him at the advice of my vet. Luckily it worked. He learned to eat slowly by the time he was 6 months old. |
Our golden retriever slows herself down from eating too fast, by grabbing her ball and putting it in her food, then she moves the bowl around as she's eating. I free feed mine, this way, it's accessible at all times, and they realize they always have food, none of my ever over eat, infact, they pretty much nibble throughout the day |
