AKC registration
 

Hi,

My husband and I are considering getting a yorkie. We are in the very early stages of looking for a local breeder right now. I have a question regarding the AKC registration. We keep seeing that on the listings and were wondering if it is necessary if we do not have any intentions of breeding it or showing it? We are really just looking for a little companion.

Doesn't matter whatsoever! I mean.. thats just my opinioin especially if you do not plan to breed. You plan to spay or neuter right?

I guess one way that it might be important is so you can be sure your yorkie is FULL yorkie.. you're able to see the yorkies family lines.

if you want to make sure you are getting a yorkie, i would get one that can be akc registered, that doesnt mean you have to though.

of course, just because they are akc registered doesnt mean they would quailify to be show dogs. my sister has a yorkie they got from a pet store that is akc registered that is 12lbs. if youre getting a yorkie, make sure you can look at both the parents because thats about the size your dog will get.

and please don't buy from a pet store...because you will be supporting puppy mills...

I always recommend the AKC. Even if you're not breeding or showing don't you want a healthy pet that looks like a Yorkie? I got Joey from a show breeder, not because I wanted a fancy dog, but because I wanted to find a breeder whose program I respected. She is truly interested in bettering the breed, she stands behind her dogs 100%. Many show breeders prices are more affordable than most people realize, as they are more interested in finding the right homes for their dogs, than making a profit. I recommend you look at the YTCA website for referral of breeders in your area that sell healthy quality dogs that make great pets. The YTCA is the parent club of the AKC and sets the standard for yorkies. However, don't hold their beauty against them, a quality breeder also wants to ensure that the line they are developing doesn't have genetic defects. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club. I also registered Joey with the AKC, because they are the only registry that does routine unannounced kennel inspections and DNA testing. I wanted to show support to them as well because I believe in what they are trying to accomplish. Please make sure any breeder you choose does health screening, some problems don't present themselves till after 2 years of age, and by then the dog has had several litters. If you read the Sick Forum, you'll find that a cheap dog is no bargain in the long run.

I personally wouldn't buy a dog with out AKC registration. AKC doesn't neccessarily mean quality, but look at the alternatives. Buying a puppy who isn't AKC, could mean you are supporting someone who bought a puppy from a reputable breeder on limited registration. They told their breeder they would never breed the dog and then did it anyway. Do you want to do business with someone like that? Can you really trust them? If they lied to who they got their adult dogs from, they will lie to you about the puppy. JMHO
