Time to schedule spay--Freaking out!! My vet said I need to get her spayed this month before she is 6 months old. Im scared to death because my friends pom died from the medicine that knocks them out for the surgery. The puppy's heart just stopped beating. She recently aquired another pom pup and refuses to spay her now because she can't go through that again. I think Im even more scared because we just recently lost our infant daughter and I dont think I can take any more loss. So getting ready for this is making it harder for me. Triss is only just over 3 lbs. So small yet. I guess I just needed to vent this. I guess I will just have to suck it up and take her. I know its best if I do. :( |
My Mia was just about 3 pounds when she had her spay. She was just over 6 months old. Have your vet run a blood test. Its worth the extra money. (I think it was $60 at my office) I'm pretty sure the reason for the blood test is to make sure your baby won't have a reaction to anything. Someone please correct me if im wrong!! I was a nervous wreck as well!! Took Mia home the same day as her surgery and by the next morning she was just fine. I'm very sorry for the loss of your daughter..... :( |
OH MY GOD, you lost your infant daughter????????? How did I ever miss that thread???? I'm so very, very sorry. You just don't know how bad that touched me. Prayers will go out for you and your family for sure. Now, as for your dog, well you may need to find another Vet. and not the one your friend used. There is no reason a dog should die when put under. Ask the Vet. to test her first to see if she can tolerate the method used. I hope you can talk to your friend and have her go to another Vet. and get that baby spayed. |
Oh bless your heart. I'm so sorry for your loss :( Please accept my codolences. I'm sure your puppy will be fine. If you are that uncomfortable with it, have a heart to heart talk with your vet and tell him/her your feelings, maybe he or she will be able to explain things and help you to feel batter about it. Take Care, Tammy |
You don't have to have her spayed right now, I know most people do it when they are 6 months, I believe it's because they can have their first heat cycle at 6 months, someone hear probably has more info about it. But, if you are really that concerned about doing it right now, you don't absolutely have to. And the other two are right, you can request that they do a test on her before the spay to make sure she will be ok. The vets I have gone to in the past offer heart monitors and all kinds of stuff that they can use to detect if anything starts going wrong during the surgery. |
OMG my heart just stopped. I'm so sorry for the loss of your daughter. I had no idea. About your furbaby....you can wait a little bit more if you want. Give yourself sometime hun. |
I am so sorry for your loss. My best friend lost her baby girl 2 years ago. She is an inspiration to me every day. Wait a while to have her spayed. You don't have to do it right now. Let her get a little older. Good luck whatever you decide. |
Pixie was spayed just a few weeks ago..and she is a little under 3lbs..like you..I was worried sick about the whole thing! I went to see my chosen vet with a list of questions..what type of anaesthesia did they use?, did they operate on a heated surface? would they be able to do the pre-op bloodwork? etc etc.. he was very patient, understanding & confident about the whole thing...he put my mind at rest..and Pixie did brilliantly!:D within 24 hours she was almost back to normal! she had a tiny 1.5cm incision which healed very quickly with no problems. she also had 7 baby teeth removed, nails all trimmed and a microchip while under anaesthesia. OMG...I just read that you lost your baby! I'm so so sorry for you!!! BIG ((((HUG)))) |
Thank you for your kind words about my daughter. I didnt post about it on this forum, but I mentioned it under the loss threads to someone who had lost a puppy. It's been only 3 months now and its still hard. She passed away on me and my husband's first anniversary. I was 6 months pregnant. She was born early, and they couldn't save her. She lived for 30 minutes. We had this written on her headstone: "If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever." My puppy Triss has helped me heal a lot, so I think I worry about the spay more than normal since I am completely attached to her. I will definately ask the vet about the blood tests. This is not the same vet that my friend went to, thank God. Im thinking about waiting at least another month or two so Triss has a chance to gain a little more weight, and maybe I will feel more ready. |

re:spay First of all, I am sorry about your daughter. I lost a son when I was 6 months pregnant too. He lived 12 hours. My prayers are going up for you. A dog won't take all the pain away, but they can give you unconditional love. I just had my Sami spay yesterday. She will be 1yo on Sept 18th. The vet wanted me to have her spayed before her first heat but I kept putting it off. I think the vet would like for your dog to be done before her heat because it reduces the risk of mammory cancer. My Sami is doing fine right now, just sleeping alot. I would suggest reading the statistics of spaying and asking your vet the statistics he has on spaying, anesthesia, etc. Good luck. |
I'm so sorry about your lil girl.:( Your sweet Triss is so cute and will fill your heart with lots of joy. I wouldn't get in a big hurry to have her spayed. Is it the same vet as your friend used? |
I am so sorry about the loss of your baby daughter. That is a beautiful saying you put on her headstone. My Roxie is going next week for spaying and I am scared too. I did have her blood work done before but she came into heat 3 days prior to her scheduled surgery. So now we are scheduled for Wednesday. Definately do the pre op blood work it is so worth it. Roxie is now 10 1/2 months old. |
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. As far as spaying your pup, I adopted my Yorkie at the age of 4 years and that's when she was spayed. She had been bred three times before that by a breeder. |
