WHEN will my pups ears pop up?? I have a 9 wk old male and he has floppy ears. will i have to shave off his hair? tape them? should i wait for them to pop up on their own or will they always flop?? thanks :animal-pa |
Shave them third of the way down....and trim the excess of the edges to reduce the weight. That will help them stand up. |
pups ears... My vet usually says after they have lost their pup - first set of teeth....anyone else ever hear of this...??? Shaving the ear part way does help with weight reduction thus allowing the ear to stand more freely. |
I got my pup at 8 weeks and her ears werent up, my breeder told me to tape her ears if I wanted them up but I really didnt understand the proper way to do it so I shaved both sides of her ears half way down and within 72 hours her ears were completely up. |
I'm a huge advocate of shaving. I shaved my dogs whole ear...well, I trimmed it very short with scissors, not actually shaved. I didn't do just 1/3 or whatever people say, but I did her whole ear to about half a centimeter...pretty much as short as I could get it with scissors. I definitely think it helped. Her ears were up and down while she was teething but just recently at six months they went up and have been up since. She's 7 months now. Good Luck. |
Hot Rod's ears finally went up at 8 mos. As a matter of fact, they went up shortly after taking my avatar picture. I did tape them a little here and there to help them along and actually gave up but one day they were up and stayed up. |

Yes, you need to go ahead and shave the ears, as already mentioned. Taping may or may not be neccessary--you will have to decide that. I waited too long to tape my last girls ears...more focused on being more stringent on doing it for her litter mates :rolleyes: and as a result, her ears only stand about half the time...the slightest bit of hair and they are right back down.:( A rookie mistake that I will NOT make again! And yes, it is not uncommon for them to flop and the whole process to need repeating when they are teething. The body is using so much calcium for the growth of teeth that the cartlidge in the ears are not getting sufficient amounts. |
My puppy's ears popped up a few days after I had them shaved at 16 weeks. |

thanks guys! i'm a little nervious to do it myself for fear i'll cut his ear or something. i think i'm going to have a groomer do it. |
My Lucy is 9 weeks also. Her ears are flloppy. I think I will try to shave them myself. They are some hairy ears :aimeeyork I use to have a big 10 lb yorky with huge floppy ears and he was so cute. So, if they flop they will just flop. |
