Dogs do not recognize themselves in a mirror... A couple of days ago I read an article in the newspaper about a dog study. The study was to determine if dogs were capable of showing empathy to humans. While watching a human yawn 76% of the dogs also yawned. Then they mentioned in a prior study that dogs do not recognize themselves in a mirror. I'm still puzzled over that one. What does the dog think when they look in the mirror and see you holding a dog. If they don't recognize themself then do they think you are cheating on them???:confused::confused: What do you think? Does your dog seem to know their own reflection? |
I don't think they recognize themselves. Onni thinks her reflection is some kind of intruder and barks and growls at herself. I have a You Tube video of her trying to vanquish the "intruder" in the mirror. |
I have to contradict this, my Squeekie loves the mirror and always turns her head when she sees herself. She also loves to look at me through the mirror even though I'm right next to her, she prefers to see me through the mirror. So everytime she does this I talk to her through the mirror. When she's looking at me through the mirror I would say "hi baby, or hi Squeekie" and she keeps turning her head. I guess because I kept doing this to her, she knows that its her in the mirror so she just loves to look at herself. Sheesh, almost sounds like she's so conceited huh, owell, that's ok with me. ;) |

I think Onni will one day come to recognize the princess in the mirror and then I probably won't be able to keep her away from it. :D |
I have always found this interesting. Mine both refuse to look at themselves in the mirror. I will hold them up to it and they can see themselves and me and they simply will not look at it, they will turn their heads away everytime. I don't know if it scares them or what, they just act somewhat odd about the whole thing, so I just don't do it anymore. |
Tucker is clueless ( as usual:rolleyes:) Our old house had a floor legenth mirror and he didn't even pay attention when he walked past it. (Rusty used to bark at the big dog in the mirror. He thought he was a yorkie, so he was afraid of that big lab looking at him!) |
haha, Lucas does that too, bark and growl at his reflection. Sometimes he'll even rub up against it as if trying to play with it... I had a lady tell me that they only really do that as puppies and then eventually realize that they are looking at themselves... or maybe they just get used to the "intruder puppy" an stop barking at them? its super funny to watch though. |

Both of mine experimented with mirrors and decided it was themselves, so they pay no attention to them now. As to empathy, YES, if ever I cut my finger etc, both mine run to see if i am OK and then sit with me. Also, my Cheyenne is a baby and some new things scare her. She once got scared of a rolled garage door going up, screamed and ran. Rusty and my CAT ran immediatley to her to make sure she was OK. They got there before I did...... a study on empathy? Oh my, they could have just asked us, lol. I always learned that a yawn in a dog is a sign of stress, not that they are sleepy.....they do yawn but only upon awakening.....they don't yawn like humans.. |
riley hates the mirror haha! at my old apartment i used to have mirrored closet doors and he'd sit in front of it every now and then and growl and bark at himself :p |
I think some do and some don't. Mine rarely look at the mirror but one time London was for a long time and went up to it and licked it, i guess she loves herself:p |

I do mosaics and have a 5 foot mirror I am working on. I put it sideways on the floor by my work area. Usually Gizmo just ignores it, but sometimes he will catch a glimpse of himself in it, and I think it scares him. He will bark and bark until one of us comes over and pets him. I think that when he sees the doggy in the mirror being petted, he decides it's okay. I honestly don't know if he realizes that it's him or not. It's interesting to think about. |
LuvtheCooper My Canyon does the same thing - he looks and turns his head away and kind of backs up. |
